43" 4k smart tv recommendations plse?

My 10 year old Sony Bravia TV has broken down and I've been told it's uneconomical to repair, I'm now looking at buying a new one that doesn't cost the earth, 4k 43" Smart - Samsung, LG or Panasonic probably. I could go up to £399, that's about it.

I've been looking at various reviews on Argos, Currys and Which and they vary so much. I've heard that LG televisions are often prone to needing repair so I'm wondering what experience others have of them.

My first choice would have been Samsung usually but I'm open to changing to LG or Panasonic.

One problem I might have with some stands is that my TV stand kind of narrows slightly on either side, one particular TV I looked at would have been a no-no because the stand was so deep.

I would really appreciate other views on the makes mentioned, many thanks in advance. :)

I would rather have a separate box that is smart, than a smart tv,

That tv may no longer get updates, and the software may become out of date and useless. They could also remove features like samsung did

No reputable 4k TV out there wouldn't be smart.
Nothing stopping anyone having a smart box attached to a smart TV though.
Samsung didn't remove Skype, Microsoft did.

I would recommend considering bigger, most manufacturers they are better TV on e you get to 49/50

Unless sitting very close you won't see 4k, you can get better colour and some HDR benefit.

Check viewing angles if all viewers are not directly in front.

AVforums has loads of info on what to look for.

Try out the interfaces some are slow and not very easy to use.

What material sources will you be using that may make one brand better than the others.

Also look to buy from John lewes or Richer Sounds for the warranty.

There are others that do 5/6 years.

Without wishing to derail the thread, can I ask a related question which may also be relevant to the OP......

How well (or badly) do 4K TVs display ordinary HD content, which has one quarter of the number of pixels of 4K? Given that Freeview currently only has c. 15 HD channels and only one demo 4K offering (AFAIK) my only source of 4K would be Amazon Prime.

I don't have and don't want to pay for Sky so what other options are there? How would I get say BBC, ITV and Ch4 in 4K without additional cost?

I have looked at a few c. 40 inch 4K TVs in John Lewis when just displaying normal daytime TV, rather than demo content, and frankly the picture has been disappointing.

A 4K TV will upscale, but many Freeview SD channels are really rubbish on any TV. It's not the way an increasing percentage of the population watch programming now.
What you see will depend on many factors. Distance, light, angle etc etc. If you are just going to watch ITV3 in a loop on a TV stuck in the corner of the lounge, then don't waste your money....Buy a cheap supermarket TV.
The pictures you see in shop demos are not what you are going to see at home.
For 4K, go for the largest TV you can, even if you initially think it'll be too big.

Very well, just SD which is poor..

Where is the 4K demo on Freeview?

As apart from the BBC which has some programming in 4K on Iplayer, none currently broadcast in 4K so you can't get them in 4K paid or free. Others free the Freesat UHD demo channel, and not free but including UHD Blu-ray, Netflix, Amazon (as you are aware) and Apple TV.

    Shop demos often are.

    The ‘stand’ conundrum. :)

It certainly can be a problem if buying a TV online, especially if your stand is oval shaped, for example.

My daughter recently bought a 50” LG TV from Curry’s but before buying it she made a cardboard template of her TV stand ‘top’ and took it into Curry’s to check that the LG stand ‘footprint’ fitted comfortably.

She was originally undecided whether to buy a 50” Samsung or the 50” LG;...however, the ‘footprint’ of the Samsung stand was far too big. The width of the stand was ok but the depth was just too much,...in fact it was ridiculously oversized for a 50” TV, imho.

Fortunately both the TV’s were on show at her local Curry’s superstore;...however, choosing a TV with a suitably sized support stand can be something of a challenge if you have a smaller, or oddly shaped cabinet..

I have no idea as I don't have a 4K TV. Somebody told me there was a 4k test channel on Freeview but they may well be wrong.

I wanted a Firestick so I bought a 4K one for £29 during the 3 day sale to sort of "future proof". At that price it seemed silly not to.
