Nope, but it's pretty standard procedure to have to notify your insurer of a change of circumstances. They can be anal about something as safe as putting winter tyres on, so if the OP wants to take a chance that he's still covered until renewal without notifying them, good luck.

Some are on conviction others at renewal. So which is the OP's policy?

I notified my insurer straight away but they told me I could do it at renewal

I think you have to notify your insurers now, not wait until renewal.
I have never seen an insurance policy which required the customer to notify the insurer of endorsements immediately. (Bans certainly, but not points) Which isn't too say that such policies don't exist, but they are certainly not the norm. The OP should check, but I would put money on him not having to declare the points until renewal time.
  • I'm insured with Aviva and they want notifying immediately for any convictions (both motoring related and non related).
Information and changes we need to know about
The principal policyholder must take reasonable care to provide complete and accurate answers to the questions we ask when you take out, make changes to, and renew your policy.
Please tell us immediately if there are any changes to the information set out in the application, ‘Information Provided By You’ document, certificate of motor insurance or on your schedule. You must also tell us immediately about the following changes:
A change to the persons insured, or to be insured.
Motoring convictions (driving licence endorsements, fixed penalties or pending prosecutions for any motoring offences) for any of the persons insured, or to be insured.
Criminal convictions for any of the persons insured, or to be insured.

I (the OP) called insurance company and they said they will bear it in mind when doing renewal quote but no charge for now.

I am changing cars at same time as end of insurance (end of lease) so it will be different anyway.
Thanks for the feedback seems like it doesn't make much difference.

I'm guessing, but I suspect it would make virtually no difference for an older driver where the risk profile is pretty well known already, but on a young driver with limited driving history it would be seen as pointing to a higher risk profile and hence higher premiums.

Yes that's true I suppose. I'm not sure what age it starts getting easier on young drivers, isn't it like 25 supposedly? idk.
I have been driving 6 years, anyway.
