Barclaycard limit

Long time since I posted but I just wanted to see what people thought about this situation and if what I feel I should do next is the right thing.

Basically my 0% purchase card is coming to the end of it's deal.
So I signed up to Barclaycard based on the recommendation of this site.

However they've given me a ridiculous credit limit of £200. I have no idea what the hell I'm supposed to do with that.

I was then given the option of uploading bank statements or payslips to prove I'm worthy. Apparently a credit check was not enough, that and the fact I own my own home.

So I upload my payslips, for some reason it wouldn't accept 2 pdfs but printscreens in jpg format were apparently acceptable.

I did that and then a couple of days ago I get an email telling me that was no good, no idea why and to do it again or take them to a branch. At this point I've sort of had enough and am thinking what are my options? They can stick it or is that a bit of a swift decision? I've never had an issue before..

Two things that could have an issue, I recently (in the last 2 weeks signed up for Revolut) and in the last 3 months took up a new job. If I tell Barclaycard to stick it and apply for another card what are my chances of having a credit check problem?

I only have 1 credit card at the moment and the Barclaycard which I have activated but not used.

Thanks for Reading

I'm afraid it's not about you sticking it to them - you are the one that wants a 0% credit card limit.

Are you prepared to jump through the hoops they have created - uploading statements in the right format or going to a branch to avoid having to apply for another card?

If not that's fine, but none of us can tell you anything tangible about your chances about having another card accepted. It is always a risk whoever you are that you won't get accepted, the risk is bigger or smaller depending on your circumstances. It's up to you to decide whether another check on your record and taking on the risk is worth it without exhausting your options with Barclaycard first.
  • I'd just apply for another card tbh. Either Sainsburys or MBNA (Sainsburys has better rewards).

If you get denied, just go ahead with doing what Barclaycard ask for and hope you can get the credit limit increased. Even if you get accepted you could just go ahead and do that when you have time anyway and have the two cards.

I don't think you'll get denied applying for the Sainsburys or MBNA cards though. Apparently if you have poor credit you just get less months 0% but you can apply for another card then anyway.

What sort of Barclaycard have you been approved for? £200 was the initial credit limit Barclaycard gave me when I obtained my first card from them in 1979.

It is not a question of payslips. Something musty be SERIOUSLY WRONG if you have previously held a mainstream 0% purchases card and have been given.a £200 credit limit. Perhaps you should check your credit files and let us know what it is.

It may be that some information that you provided on your application didn't quite match that on your credit file (a variation in name or address for example - your name might be Christopher and on file it's Chris) - and if you have only one existing credit card - you have a very thin credit file, so Barclays are probably being cautious to ensure that your details are correct. I wouldn't throw my toys out of the pram and go for another lender - I'd pop along to the branch with the required paperwork and resolve the issue, and most likely get a realistic limit. And has been said - take a look at your CRA files to ensure they are all recorded correctly.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm not trying to "stick it to them", I'm just thinking why bother with this hassle and just go elsewhere. My current M&S card has a £5000 limit and I never had to jump through these hoops to get it. I'd stick with them if my offer wasn't coming to a close. The reason I chose Barclaycard was because I used to have a business account with them and their website is decent.

WRT to the payslips I'm not sure what their problem is, it goes green if it likes the upload and red if it doesn't. Everything was green, for the screenshots the information on it is pretty clear, if they don't say what's wrong with it then I can't correct it as that's the only info I will upload.

Not sure what my credit history is like, like I say I'm a home owner with one CC. I've never had an issue with credit cards before or been asked for this before.

I've only ever had 2 credit cards at the same time so I wasn't sure how many you have have before it starts to raise eyebrows. I guess that was my original question really.

Cheers cymruchris, that's probably what I will do and if they're still not happy I'll get them to close the account and go with someone who's a bit more reasonable.

In view of what has occurred, may I respectfully suggest that you find out.

Yes, agreed - take a look at your history just in case there's any inaccuracy there to be found.

This is nothing unusual. This is just a new Barclaycard thing, as part of anti fraud checks, if they aren’t able to verify your income electronically they will tell you what credit limit you can get once you have sent them proof of your income, either payslips or bank statements, and only give you access to a £200 credit limit to begin with until they verify the income.

However the process they have in place to send these documents to them is useless. I am currently trying to send them this information to unlock my £4K limit. The online thing does not work. No matter what I try and upload even in the correct format, I get error messages.

I have been into branch and they have sent my statements off to them but I have to wait 5 days. Quite frankly I’m not holding out much hope of it being done in that time. And I am a bit puzzled as to why they Weren’t able to check my income against the regular income that goes into my Barclays current account every month for well over a year now...

Check your credit files, you don't pay for them as there are free options (just do a search on the forum) in case there is something obvious that sticks out.

It may be something with Barclaycard or you have applied for their Initial card which is meant for people with bad credit so they do the type of checks regularly, who knows. If that is the only form of credit you have applied for recently then maybe apply for another, like MBNA who tend to give bigger limits.

Just leave the Barclaycard for now, if you need to give them all the documentation because something on your credit file is stopping you get credit elsewhere, you can provide that then.

Not sure how many credit cards would raise an eyebrow, but it's a lot more than two. I have six and not had more than ten at any one time, but I'm sure others have many more. I applied for a Sainsbury's 0% card and shocked that they gave me a credit limit of £1500, which whilst perfectly adequate for my use a I just wanted it to pay for Christmas and pay off in the following six months that I went straight out and applied for a Santander account ant got a £4K limit. So apply for another 0% and carry on with your life, don't close accounts you have though you don't have the Barclaycard yet because if you can count your credit cards on one hand you don't have too many.

How do they verify your income electronically. It’s it something to do with credits into your bank account or do they see the name of your employer?
