Sorry to be the "hindsight" guy, but Barclaycard have their own eligibility checker before they do a proper hard search. What chance of approval did that give you?

I wondered whether that was the case and he was just telling me what I wanted to hear. No wonder he told me to wait until after the card came. Perfect excuse to get me off the phone. They were the same in branch at Santander last Friday when I asked if it were possible to extend the promotional period "If you give our credit card line a call they might be able to do something for you." They probably knew full well they wouldn't. Which of course they didn't.

Tbh I've never been in this situation before. I've always resisted credit cards and taken loans from credit unions for large purchases previously to avoid this kind of scenario and now that it's happened frankly it's scared me a bit. Lesson to be learnt I guess. That's the reason I've been wanting to seek a second card.

Just wondering why you'd advise against applying to another lender? Would applying to one of the sub prime lenders put a major black mark on my file or something?
I doubt that Santander will extend it.
There really is nothing to be sacred of. The interest payable each month on a balance of £1,200 on the Santander card will be very approximately £18 per-month. Nothing to be scared about and nothing that should break the bank. As the balance decreases by repayments, the monthly interest will of course also drop.
You were fortunate to get a Santander 0% purchase card as your first and only credit card and have had the misfortune to have to spend the extra money on purchases almost right at the end of the duration of the promotional offer.
Is there any way you could contact MBNA and apologise and say that you would like the card after all? The balance transfer fee is after all less than Fluid.
Regarding the advice not to make further applications, this is generalised advice based on the fact that multiple applications and multiple hard searches on your credit files can cause you to look desperate for credit and can lead to applications being declined..It would appear that you already have at least 5 very recent hard searches on your credit files. However, on the basis that the damage is already done and one or two more won't cause too much further damage, then go ahead and attempt more applications. You may be lucky. Be aware that if you fail to repay the Fluid balance transfer before the 9 month promotional period is up the interest charged on the balance will be much higher than Santander charge.
    .
  • All sorted. I reapplied for MBNA and was accepted on the same offer as before.

Have done a £1,000 balance transfer from my outstanding debt of £1,200 on my Santander purchase card.

The DD's for both my new cards don't begin until December, which gives me a free pay day month in November to clear the remaining £200 with Santander directly without any interest or BT fees.

So in summary I had a debt of £2,750 on my Santander purchase card with 18.95% APR about to kick in on 5/11/19. Both Halifax and MBNA have offered me 16 months 0% APR, with 27.95% APR thereafter, coupled with £1,600 and £2,100 credit limits respectively. I BT'd £1,520 onto Halifax with a 3% fee and BT'd £1,000 onto MBNA with a 3.49% fee and £20 cashback. Total BT fee between both cards after cashback will be £60.

Repayments. Halifax told me I'll have 15 monthly pay days during the interest free period so have set that up for £105pm. Assuming I'll have the same 15 pay days with MBNA that'll be £67pm. Total £172 combined for 15 months.

It'll soon be over and I'm feeling a lot more positive about everything than I was this time last week. Thanks for your help guys.
  • The DD’s may not begin until December but you may still need to make manual payments until the DD kicks in.

Be sure to check your statements for this

OK. I'll double check that but the guy did say the statement was produced sometime during November I think and the first DD will be on or around 5/12/19.
