Virgin Nokia 3310 unlock

Hi,
The changes that virgin have made to their PAYG rates (see separate thread) have made me look for alternatives. Currently giffgaff looks to suit me the best, however I need to unlock my old Nokia 3310 from Virgin before I can do anything.

I have followed links from giffgaff to an unlocking site - nokiafree.org/unlock/ - and have inputted my IMEI number (351106801716598) but nothing seems to happen.

Does anyone know how I can do this?
Many thanks

    you could consider asda mobile.

free sim, and may well work without unlocking
    about 8p/min
  • Andypk,
Thanks for that, I’ve just looked at Asda website and it looks very similar to the giffgaff approach of monthly bundles that you can alter as you need to, which is what I was interested in, as my useage varies from very little on a normal month, with peaks a couple of months a year when I use mobile data on my travels.

I presume my phone may work without unlocking because both virgin and Asda use EE?

You could try asking Virgin for the unlock code

They may well be unable to help, but they ought to.

You need to ask Virgin to unlock it, I asked Orange/EE to unlock the wifes Nokia 3220 with Orange disappearing and they had to pass it on to Nokia themselves. It was pretty quick though.
  • Thanks - I’ve just spoken to virgin who tried the number and found that they hadn’t locked it, but gave me the phone number for EE . They confirmed that it was locked to them (so it would presumably work with Asda). I have to ring back tomorrow before 8pm to speak to their unlocking dept and all will be well.

If that is successful then I will probably go to giffgaff, as they have free calls between mobiles on their network (which Asda doesn’t have).

Just to be clear, the free calls between mobiles on Giffgaff is only to other Giffgaff users.

Also keep in mind that free giffgaff to giffgaff calls have specific terms:

    *Free to giffgaff:
You need to add credit or buy a goodybag at least once every 3 months to receive free giffgaff to giffgaff calls if you don't other UK rates will apply as above. The free giffgaff to giffgaff calls last for 60 minutes per call, so you need to hang up and re-dial if you want to keep talking, without being charged.
  • Colin & Dave,

Thanks -I was aware of this, but giffgaff still seems to meet my requirements which is to register mine and my wife’s sim with giffgaff on payg, with the minimum credit on each.

We mainly use the phones to communicate with each other - I ring her mostly so her credit usually lasts about 10 yrs!

I will top mine up as and when needed and for the couple of months that we spend travelling I will buy a goody bag so as to use the WiFi hotspot on my smartphone (the rest of the year I have reverted back to a Nokia 3310 as I get sick of charging up the smart phone).

This should work out a lot cheaper than my current arrangement with virgin which costs me £7/month for 1gb data and then I have to top it up when I am travelling at a cost of £20 for 3gb (which has to be used in one month or I lose it).

So congratulations to virgin - by bringing in increased charges on payg they have made me investigate my pay monthly sim and they will lose that as well - and I will half my annual mobile costs.

Incidentally EE have to get my unlock codes from elsewhere (Nokia?) and promise to get back to me in 10 days - they say I will have to pay £ 8.99 per phone. But still worth it.

    My plan is :
