Having registered keeper and main driver the "wrong way round"?

My husband and I currently have a multi-car insurance policy covering us and our two cars. I will be getting a new car soon, and my husband will be scrapping his and having my current one (which is quite new, but I'd just like something smaller and my husband likes mine). Rather than transfer the ownership over to him, can we buy the new car in his name but still insure me as the main driver (and vice versa with him driving "my" car)? We will rarely drive one another's cars so I'm not sure if this is something we shouldn't do for some reason.
The sole purpose would be to avoid my current car having an additional owner on its log book, and I also don't want two cars registered in my name and neither in my husband's.
Sorry that was a bit long winded - hopefully makes sense!
Many thanks

The important thing is that the insurer knows who will be the main driver. Between husband and wife, they won’t care who owns it or is the registered keeper0

When shopping for car insurance, quotes can be higher if the owner of a vehicle isn't the same person as the registered keeper. Not sure about husband and wife.0 -

We have 2 cars, I am the main driver of my wifes and she's the main driver of mine. Not had an issue sorting the insurance.
This came about due to a change in jobs and negated the need to change the registered keeper on the V5.
(Oh and we both live at the same address)

Myself and the missus have exactly the same scenario for various historic reasons.
We are not listed as named drivers on each other’s insurance policies and It doesn’t make a jot of difference to the premium.
Most online forms will ask the questions of who is the registered keeper and who is the main driver (usually the person taking out the policy)
Just be 100% honest and there will be no issues.
As a side note, changing the name on the V5 doesn’t trigger an extra owner as we found out when the last dealer we dealt with registered the car to me instead of the wife.0 -
Sorry, post should say - we ARE listed as named drivers on the others polices. (Can’t edit posts on my mobile)0

Thanks so much for the replies everyone - looks like our plan should be fine then
Much appreciated.sevenhills wrote: »When shopping for car insurance, quotes can be higher if the owner of a vehicle isn't the same person as the registered keeper. Not sure about husband and wife.
I thought the owner and registered keeper were the same thing (though I do believe that the V5 can't be used as proof of ownership)... hmm 0 -
Ownership is usually whoever signed for the our purchase and paid the money whereas registered keeper can theoretically be anyone.
For example under a finance agreement, the finance provider may (will?) be classed as the owner whereas the person taking possession of the car will be the registered keeper.
I agree that husband/wife owner/main driver/registered keeper has in my experience made no difference what so ever
I guess it can make a difference, but I have never found that to be the case.
As above, as long as you are 100% honest on the application, there will be no issues.0 -
