A laptop for £400....which is the best??

Hi everyone! I'm looking to spend around £400 on a laptop which I want to use for one game in particular (Football Manager 2008) and also Wi-Fi. Any ideas which will be the best to go for? I started off slightly confused with all the different processors that are on offer, but am gradually getting to know more about them...

How does this one look for value?

The Athlon 64 x 2 is meant to be pretty good for gaming, better than Celeron M at least - Any advice or further recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • a celeron isn't meant for gaming in any way shape or form and I really wouldn't recomend using curries etc their prices don't (usually) tend to be that competative. Have a look at some of the online stores such as dabs, ebuyer or dell etc.
  • I've had a good look at Dell and the online ones, but they all seem rather similar if not worse. Would prefer not to go with the high street retailers as they are usually overpriced, but with the one i sent on the link it seems to be pretty competitive. Plus advantage of buying from the high street makes it a little easier to sort of anything goes wrong. Is the Athlon 64 x 2 pretty reasonable for gaming? Does the laptop on the link I sent seem reasonably spec'd?
  • Anyone got any suggestions?

    Yup

Go to www.dmxdimension.com. Check out the Dell Vostro 1000. There is one for £411 but its a much better processor. Register with quidco, go to dell.co.uk from there, select shop by evalue code, use the code from www.dmxdimension.com (prefixed with 305) and get £20.50 as cashback.
  • Is the Turion processor generally considered to be better than the Athlon?

I agree - but small quible on quidco:
the price before VAT & delivery is £299 - so 5% quidco is £14.95 - still worth having.
Don't forget to reduce warranty to minimum to get best price. Dell computers are very reliable so no worries!

    Dell all the way...
  • Thanks for all of your help and advice, i'm just having a little bit of trouble understanding the whole discunt thing suggested earlier. I've signed up with Quidco and loaded the website however i can't see where it will register the cashback....I enter the evalue code on the 'add coupon' screen once i've completed the order and it doesn't seem to do anything. I'm almost certainly doing something wrong, can someone point me in the right direction please!!

Also, would anyone recomend any of the upgrades to the Vostro 1000, such as better screen and higher cell battery?

You dont need to register the cashback, simply log on to quidco, find dell in their list of sites, then click the link.

You dont use the add coupon option, on either the main screen or the 'small business' screen down the left hand side near the bottom, 'shop by evalue code'

    Battery upgrade really good idea.

Screen upgrade to 'truelife', no not really. it makes the screen glossy so you get bad reflections on it. but thats just my opinion
