Warm Home Discount

Have received Warm Home Discount from both previous suppliers, due to low income and being disabled, although only receive pension contributions from Benefit Agency. When switching to another supplier through MSE I looked out to see if this WHD was offered by new supplier, it was so switched to them for better deal. Noticed on hovering offer WHD that it advises if you are currently receiving WHD you will most likely still receive it. I naivly took this to believe I would still qualify/receive WHD, only now I have been requested to apply for this years scheme and find the goalposts have been moved! Apparently different suppliers have different qualififing rules- find out I do not qualify under their rules! So I've switched to save money but have lost out on £140 WHD.

  • Each supplier has there own criteria. It's always advisable to check what they are before moving your account.

Possibly the MSE could update the text for people looking to switch, not to advise them they will most likely receive it, if claimed previously.
  • the criteria has changed substantially this yr

I claimed with EON in 17/18 as I was on income related ESA and was accepted. 18/19, I moved supplier who did not offer WHD. 19/20, I am back with EON and (ESA wise) they have the same criterion as they did in 17/18, that is "claiming income related ESA".

The broader group apply on time when the different suppliers applications open each and every year and get in the cue. You supply the evidence/documents they ask for in time. The discount [£140(-VAT)] is not given directly to you, but applied to your energy bill between October and March, meaning the discount is effectively handled by your energy supplier.

Clearly its down to you to get the evidence ready in advance and watch like a hawk for the application invite opening day. Best of luck.

Its taxpayers money, they only distribute it.

The registered legislated deserving [core group] are automatically taken care of by the DWP.

You have to play by their rules my friend or you lose.

I agree. But it should be a level playing field. Each company has a set number of places, depending on the number of their customer base, so there will always be winners and losers. Yet, I can apply with EON, but would not be able to some others.
