They have a machine for checking the brakes and look under the car at brake pipes.

You are perfectly entitled to find a more relaxed garage who use their discretion.

It was quite obvious that the nuts were missing. The nuts were not covered by anything. Also, I was under the impression that a missing wheel nut results in an MOT failure. If they don't take the wheels off then how do they check the condition of the brakes?

Like I have said I have no way of proving that it's their fault but the fact that they did not notice it (or forgot to put it back on) does shake my trust in their ability to perform an MOT - especially when each time they make a point of putting as many advisories as they can on the MOT (a lot more than a normal garage would) stating that they are more vigilant than the other garages and it is something they have to do - may be I am just venting but I am really p***ed with them.

If the nuts were obvious then why didnt you notice the before them before (i have a 2011 astra with still has wheel trims on so if one does not remove that then there is no way you can see the nuts hence the reason i asked as newer cars still have trims from new not all come with alloy wheels)

They do NOT remove anything when doing an mot test not even the wheels, the mot test is a visual inspection on the brakes and they way an mot tester fails the mot on brakes is first if it does not meet the min requirements on the roller brake checker and the next way is to look at the condition of the pads and disks either through the alloys gaps or from behind the wheel under the car
People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. For the repair it depends where you live. I use established independents for puncture repairs, they might also be able to supply missing wheel bolts. I wouldn't recommend driving with only one bolt holding the wheel on.

    What car is it?

Far too many people are ignorant to what is involved in a mot and what is their own responsibility. Be cross with your self, you are at fault.

The missing bolts could be where someone was trying to steal the wheels and never finished the job

You might consider taking one fastener from another wheel and putting it on the wheel with three until such time as you can source replacements
  • Thanks for the reply folks. To clarify, I had some spare nuts with me which I did put on immediately as I was putting the spare wheel on. My children regularly travel with me in the car, I would never knowingly put them in danger.

During the MOT last month both front suspension arms were replaced. I think that would require the wheels to be taken off. I agree with the posters who have pointed out that it is indeed my responsibility to do regular checks and make sure the vehicle is safe - no excuses but I am still not happy that the garage either did not see the missing nuts or forgot to put them on themselves.
All four wheels have locking nut in place. I doubt anyone was trying to steal them.

Thanks for all your help. I got the puncture fixed today at another local garage for £10. They have good reviews online. I will probably try them for an MOT next year.

Who carries spare wheel bolts with them...?

Still, there we go. Issue sorted. Imminent death averted.

Not during the MOT, but while the car was with them for - I presume - a test which it failed, work to rectify those issues, and a second test. Yes, it would. Were the missing fasteners from the front wheels?

I think you're missing the point. It's considerably easier to prove that the fasteners were omitted within a few days of the work, than a month or so later.

Nobody's suggesting that if they were omitted after the work, then that's anything but utterly shoddy.

I find it easier to keep any small spares for the car in the car itself ... fuses, bulbs, wipers, even have some spark plugs and an oil filter  that way I know exactly where to look when I need one.

Yes they were from one of the front wheels. All the work/test was done within the same appointment on the same day.
