Mobile phones - insurance or repairs?

I have a mobile phone on a contract from t-mobile. It is about 13/14 months old (contract lasts for 18 months).
I used to have insurance but at £7.99 a month it got a bit expensive. (I am a student)

My phone has recently stopped working properly  and i am wondering the best way to go about getting it fixed.

My first idea - to go to a mobile phone shope to get it fixed.
2nd Idea - see if its coverered under my dad's home insurace, and claim that way?
3rd Idea - to get insurance for it, then claim

Can anyone advise me? I am going to need my phone during the Christmas hols as it is also my internet connection when i am at home.

Thanks
