Current agents refuse to give me a reference til I give the my notice. What should I do?

I am waiting for references to complete for a new place but the current agents have sent me an email saying the won't give me a reference til I give them notice. How is this allowed?
That means if I give notice and I am not accepted at the other one I will have been strong armed into leaving.
And so they are holding my acceptance hostage with the new tenancy.
What to do?

either forward the email to the new landlord/agent so they can see why there's no reference, and/or ask your landlord for a reference instead of the agent.0

Thanks. I have done the former and briefed the referencing company with the forwarded email also indicating I can show all proofs necessary of prompt rent payment.
Also, regarding the notice given, I have read both that you do not need to give any notice at all when on a rolling contract and that any you do give is just a 'courtesy' but I also read that you need to give 28 days notice so which is it?
I would like to move asap without rent overlap but since it is the 18th now and my rent goes out on the 23rd that leaves it very fine seeing as I have not had the referencing accepted in the new place yet.
The current agents said in their reply that when giving notice I 'must' tell them on the exact day the rent comes out. Is that true? Please can we advise that you will have to hand in notice from the day that your rent is due.
Because it goes out on the 23rd but the tenancy AST is written as the end of the month. So I would give a months notice from when? the last day of october? to leave at the end of novemeber?0 -
You need to give notice. The no notice is at the end of a fixed term. i.e. if your fixed term was 1st January for 12 months, you could leave without notice on 31st December.0

And what about the date of the day I should give it? the same day as the day it ended on my original AST?
EDIT: Ah I see G_M responded beforeIf your SPT periods are 13th to 12th each month, to avoid any argument, serve by (ie on or before) 12th to expire the following 12th, which is a full months notice.0 -
Hmm, there seems to be a bit of confusion in that thread as to whether the date you give the notice from is the date the money usually goes out your bank to them or the day/date of the tenancy's end on the contract; so which is it because mine are not the same and the latter of the date on the tenancy would be better.
Ah I see it says from the bible thatThe day rent is paid is irrelevant.
So it would be like I said, the end of the month (same date/day as my AST Ended)?0 -

The original paper one I sign was for till 30 may however when the handover was made to these agents they put on the dashbaord it is til the 28th of may.
I don't mind the couple days different however I just receieved the email back from the referencing company saying that can't complete it until they get a landlord reference.
I could still give them my landlord's details but this would probably hold up the referencing process since when I contacted them before regarding the periodic tenancy they never responded to me; so I guess they would defer to the agent which would mean even more delays. I don't even have an email or phone for them so it would be a snail mail which certainly would take days and even then they probably wouldn't respond directly.
Am I railroaded into acquiescing to giving notice immediately? I think they chances are fairly good all would be ok with the referencing...but still that gives the current agents the leverage should there be any more issues wouldn't it?0 -
