Poor tiling job

  • Mark on the door is clearly damage rather than something that happens when tiling, will it scrub off and or paint over as if you pushed on this point that's what the tiler is likely to do.

I've done some tiling at home but wouldn't class myself as anything other than an amateur so take the following based on that.

You might be best posting these photos on the Home & DIY board to ask for opinions on the job to get more of an idea of what should be expected.

To my eye the patchy ground isn't right, can be removed and redone but not a fun job. If the tiler supplied the grout it would certainly be their responsibility (what brand was it?).

A bit of grout on skirting is expected I would say, you may find it scrubs off but although a little sloppy in places it doesn't look horrific if I'm honest and a coat of paint will likely hide any that won't come off.

In these pictures the tiles aren't cut well and it's particularly noticeable:

Really to get the best finish you want to tile and then fit skirting as it hides any the rough bits and gives a much neater finish.

I'm sure plenty of professionals can do the job with a very tidy finish either way.

Grout line around the edge should be even all way around the room in my opinion (there may be slight variation as rooms are rarely truly square but this is another reason to tile then fix skirting).

I personally would not be happy with poor cuts or varying grout lines around the edges and would focus on this when you complain.

This looks like a job done by a general diy person rather than a tiler.
    Where did you find him?

There is no way that was done by a professional tiler.
I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!
  • He is a local builder. He had a team of three, including himself. He states he does tiling, as well as other larger projects.

We certainly aren’t happy with it. As we all know, once tilting is down, that’s it, unless you remove the lot. This is because his original reference point was wrong in the first place. This is evident, as he calculated the width of the dining room would be just right for 6 tiles plus the grout in between. However, it falls short approximately 2-3 cm either side, hence he has had to use those thick layers of grout to fill the large gaps.

These are only some of the issues. Also very noticeable is the tiling to the plinths under the kitchen units. Because tiling isn’t flat, it makes the plinths look like they have been cut by Stevie Wonder. Also, because he hasn’t planned it properly, he has had to use quite a bit of grout where the tile meets the plinth.

He did the job in two parts. Firstly the bathroom upstairs, which was done ok if I’m honest, despite the grout being the wrong colour (should have been gun metal, but is cream). Do you think I should query the lot, not pay him until it’s done properly, or pay him for the bathrooms and hold back the money on the downstairs until it’s done properly?

I’m so annoyed, as this is so much money for us, and to get right now will mean lifting all the tiles downstairs. I should be taking him to court expecting him to pay for the removal of the tiles if anything.

First of all you should give him the chance to rectify the work.

Yes, I will do that of course. We are just so upset with all this and didn’t expect such a bodge job.
  • I can see why you'd be upset. Looks like a terrible job.

As stated further up, skirting board should have been removed, then floor tiled up to wall.

Have you never seen any light coloured grout then? It available in most if not all decent tile suppliers.

Sorry shouldve been clearer, when its not brilliant white its almost always going to show up very obviously against brilliant white skirting boards.

No one uses white grout on floors (unless theyre particularly daft or are lining a pool). Anything that isnt white is darker than white. I stand by my comment. :P
  • Thanks.

And I haven’t even said how much he intends on charging me. In the thousands.
