Poor tiling job

I have just had someone do a tiling job in my new house.

The upstairs bathroom areas have been done to a satisfactory standard. I am really unhappy with the downstairs area, which is the main part and most expensive.

The issues I have are:

- Grout wrong colours and patchy
- tiles uneven
- grout lines on skirting
- tiles not flush/uneven along skirting

Any advice. I haven’t paid yet, however feeling really upset as this was the most expensive part of flooring we have had, however is the worst. I was really looking forward to getting it done.

Have you spoke to the tiler?

Was the grout mixed by the tiler or pre mixed? Sounds more like a product fault than the fitters fault.

Tiles should be even, hard to get perfectly flush so a mm here and there should be tolerable.

Nothing you can do about grout lines on skirting. GRout is very sticky and usually very dark, skirting boards are textured and usually white, if its gets on its going to mark even when you try wiping it off immediately, i think you need to accept repainting the woodwork.

Again should be pretty flush/even, wont ever be like glass but you shouldnt really notice it under foot.

I mentioned to him first thing this morning about the grout colour being a different colour and he said he would leave me some grout to finish off myself.

Every contract to supply a service is to be treated as including a term that the trader must perform the service with reasonable care and skill.

    https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/15/section/55/enacted

    Right to repeat performance
(1)The right to require repeat performance is a right to require the trader to perform the service again, to the extent necessary to complete its performance in conformity with the contract.
(2)If the consumer requires such repeat performance, the trader—
(a)must provide it within a reasonable time and without significant inconvenience to the consumer; and
(b)must bear any necessary costs incurred in doing so (including in particular the cost of any labour or materials).

    https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/15/section/56/enacted

    Right to price reduction

The right to a price reduction is the right to require the trader to reduce the price to the consumer by an appropriate amount (including the right to receive a refund for anything already paid above the reduced amount).

Basically the job must be carried out with skill, you should offer trader chance to rectify or negotiate a discount off the agree price.

It may well be reasonable to suggest the lifting of fitted tiles in order to perform the job again would cause significant inconvenience and a price reduction is appropriate.

With threads like this it would be interesting to see some pictures of the work.

Put the pics on a hosting site, eg, imgur.com, then post the bbcode link.

Have you never seen any light coloured grout then? It available in most if not all decent tile suppliers.

Fixed that for you. We don't need to see the images in the thread - links to them are fine.
  • Hope that helps. It is difficult to show the uneven tiles, but can upload tomorrow. Lost of joints are in sync also.
