OP why not ask around friends and family to see if one of them has a chequebook - you give them the cash they make the cheque out on their account for you?

You will need it every year to get your discount so just get a cheque book and stop making life so awkward. Much better things to spend your time doing

Nationwide will issue a counter cheque for free if you don't have a cheque book.

Other building societies will also do this on request.

Halifax/BOS used to issue them against saving accounts without charge but this may have changed.
