Safety bars, which work the same way as a chain, can be retro fitted to UPVC doors by most local suppliers of the doors..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Unfortunately they can't, because you would need to screw into the face of the door which would weaken the plastic and immediately void any warranty on the door. Works perfectly with timber doors but PVC is a big No-No. I wouldnt want anyone screwing into my door if I'd paid £500+ for it.0 -
The people who installed our door put both the safety chain and the door bell on. Good local firm, long known to us.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

Sorry Errata, Rather than saying that they can't fit them I should have said that they shouldn't fit them. They can of course screw into the plastic face but if you check with any door manufacture they will advise that any fixiings to the face will invalidate your warranty. Sadly, criminals are getting wise to the fact that chains on upvc doors are not substantial enough. The chain on www.upvcdoorchain.com is honestly by far the best option and anyone that has bought one I am sure will strongly recommend.0 -
I am not sure quite how the OP thinks that they are going to hammer a 3" or 4" nail into the wall. There is very little chance of you succeeding. If you use a screw and wall plug, then fair enough, although even then 3" would be overkill. A couple of 2" x 12 gauge screws would be pretty difficult to break. Also, I assume that these dog chains have welded links, because if they do not then a serious interloper's weight might possibly open the links.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
It is no good if you have double UPVC doors. :undecided0 -
I emailed them last night and have been informed of the version they do for double / patio doors and will be ordering one. It is more expensive @ £17.50 for a single unit but saves drilling into the door.0
