Home Security Upvc Doors

Options
As any one who has a plastic double glazed street door will know it is not always possible to fit a door chain to stop unwanted callers forcing their way past older people.

Here is my simple solution.. . You need a metal dog choker collar chain - £1.09 from Wilkinson or a pet shop. Two long 3 or 4 inch nails or Screws.

Attach One end of Dog choker collar loop over door handle and open door wide enough to see out, mark position of remaining chain against wall nearest the door and using large head nails attach through the chain to side wall.

When anyone calls simply loop the end of the dog chain over the handle open door, if it is ok close door unloop and open. You are now safe :T

If any one would like a picture PM me, as I can't insert the file here.

I don't have a problem and have never thought of anyone 'trying to force their way past me' whether unwanted callers or not.

Do you think I would be justified in using this to defend myself, if anyone tried to force themselves past me? This is a historical offensive/defensive weapon, ornamental now, but used to good effect by my ancestors: http://www.englandandenglishhistory.com/English_merchandise_seax_spears/default.aspx

We have a solid wooden door with a door-chain, but this could be a second line of defence.

  • One of those with the dog-lead door chain should be more than sufficient , Margaret!

We could also chose from the selection below.

Thanks for the tip, jnelhams - a good idea!

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • Not a bad idea but I wouldn't rely on the strength of the handle if somebody wanted to force their way through my front door, also the expense of replacing the handle is not something I would want. You can buy a safety chain specifically for upvc doors from www.upvcdoorchain.com which retails at just under £10 which does not invalidate the warranty on your door.

Home safety officers at local police stations will willingly advise older people on the best kit for this problem, there are several methods, where it's available and a list of contractors who will do the work. Age Concern branches have a list of approved workmen who will carry out work responsibly and at a reasonable cost.

    Hi Carol
it is very easy to use and install, I received mine early this afternoon and had it installed within 10mins. The only part of the device that needs fixing is the part that has the chain attached. This connects to the wall next to the door and then the second part of the security chain slides between the rubber holding the glass in on the door and the door itself. I used a small screw driver just to move the seal slightly off the glass then it slid in neatly. It works very well and makes me feel a lot happier about leaving my mother in law on her own. Let me know if you need any more advice for installing.

Most callers, are chancers and if they are going to get in they will. Obviously a special chain will be better, but a dog chain and a few screws should at least give appearance of a strong deterrent, and hopefully a few seconds to slam the door shut. I wish these door makers would add these things to begin with along with a viewer. After all there's more of us getting older than younger. :rotfl:

A good idea but do remember to tell people who live alone not to keep the chainon all the time, just put it on when they open the door, otherwise if they are taken ill and someone needs to get in to them if the chain is on they won't be able to get help.

Unfortunately, Its been something that has been hugely overlooked. There are so many older people who all their life have been used to putting a chain on the door and now, although they have a nice new energy efficient front door, they have no way of fitting a chain so end up opening the door to whoever knocks.
