does Square invalidate credit card protection ?

Options
I have had a new central heating system installed and now due to make a last stage payment. I am concerned about the standard of work. There have been a few problems throughout the process and I’m not confident in the final job though it appears to be complete I wonder just how reliable it will be. I have been making credit card payments by phone to the company who installed the system but I noticed they use Square. I thought there would be some protection with credit card payment but now I understand if a processor like Square is involved the protection may not be there.

I don't see why the chain is broken if they use square, they're just a payment provider like Worldpay and the rest. If you don't have an account with them yourself I don't think the PayPal scenario applies.

Thank you, I don’t have an account with them but was told recently that if there is an intermediary payment processor like Square and it’s not chip and pin but over the phone then the rules are somewhat blurry. If that’s not the case, that’s great.

    No.

Every payment involves an intermediary, unless the recipient is also a processor. Which is unlikely...

Can I please ask exactly how you have discovered that they use Square?

When I googled this it brought me to MSE....where I saw an article from 2017 in the MSE which said something like....warning section 75 through credit card payments may fail due to loophole if using third party... ....sorry tried to post the link but as new user won’t let me.

I got receipts for the payments and noticed Square was the providing the payment platform service. A friend and I were talking about credit card protection and the third party question came up. I googled it and found an article on MSE about a possible loophole. I found a question in the credit card forum on MSE about this but it hadn’t been updated in a couple of months so I posted to it to see if any news. I decided to post my own question in the hope I could get some clarity as it did seem like a grey area. Thanks for your reply.
