For what it's worth I don't think you're wrong here and I say that as someone who has worked for a bank.

I don't get the justification that an intermediary like Square or even PayPal matters that much, especially as they're becoming increasingly common as card payments have taken off. Sadly, without someone willing to challenge the status quo in court we're at an impasse I think.

A dodgy employee could hack the terminal in their office.

I've had fraudulent transactions on my credit cards a couple of times over the years. None within the last decade and I've never been left out of pocket.

I wouldn't think twice about paying online with a credit card.
