York - where to eat

Options
Going to York for a day trip and wondered if anyone knows of a good place to eat lunch ( looking for good standard of food at reasonable prices) - investigated Betty's tearooms but prices seemed a tad over the top. Thanks!

There is a pub near the Minster - just across the road from Boyses that is very reasonably priced.

Think it is called the Cross Keys but not sure

Wooligan 2 squares for smoky - 3 squares for HTA
    Preemie hats - 2.
  • There's a good Chinese buffet called 'The Willow' on Coney St, next door to WH Smith.

I think the lunchtime buffet is £5.50

There is a converted church near the Coney St/Market St junction and quite near the river that serves good, reasonably priced food. Wish I could remember it's name...St somethingorother. shame this is probably of no help at all unless someone else can remember for me...I'm having a senior moment;)

Thanks all, it's good to get some personal recommendations.
troll35 - I've looked up a guide book and could it be the Spurriergate Centre?
philipjg - I pressed the thanks button and it hasn't come up on my screen - thanks anyway!

The Roman Bath pub, in a corner of Picadilly, the main area, look for Browns Dpt store and you'll see the pub, we always go there, excellent value, just have a look at the portions first, as you may be able to buy only one meal between you if you are having the sandwiches and chips!

Another vote for the Spurriergate centre - reasonably priced home cooking.

If you want to spoil yourself do Betty's - it's well worth the money. Get there early though.

Don't go to Pizza Express - same as Pizza Express anywhere else!
  • The Mason's Arms does good food and not expensive.
  • Betty’s is lovely but unless you’ve got a much larger bank balance than average, it’s for birthday treats only!

    Some suggestions:

The converted church in Coney St IS The Spurriergate centre; good for wholesome lunches (e.g. home baked quiches and salads; home made soups; baked potatoes). They also do a yummy range of cakes.

The cafe bar at City Screen cinema is good for both lunch and dinner – mid-price range, nice food and it’s next to the river. (see http://www.picturehouses.co.uk/cinema_cafe_info.aspx?venueId=york)
(Just don’t check they’re doing a BIG SCREAM day – that’s for parents and toddlers and the place will be full of kids – unless you don’t mind of course ??) It’s just off Coney St.

There's a HA HA bar in New Street (off Coney St) if you like that chain. Food's good. http://www.hahaonline.co.uk/your-haha-bar.asp

If you want pizza, the best place is Tuscany on Coney Street

The sandwiches are good in the City Art Gallery café (as is the coffee and cake)

Café Concerto in High Petergate does some nice food; very small; walls are papered with old music scores. It gets busy, so get there early if you go there for lunch (i.e. aim to get there by 12.00 rather than 1.00) http://www.cafeconcerto.biz/index2.html

Hope these are enough suggestions? (As you can probably guess, I live in York. If you need any more help, let me know).
  • If you want to choose a restaurant by reviews try Sugarvine. I think it's a great website and I have left reviews on it too.

Look in the Leeds & Yorkshire and then select York.

    Hope this helps

Have a nice time in York.
