MXW Don't be afraid of changing the burner on your PC. Mine started playing up and I decided to change it. Up to that stage I had never opened up a computer and I am not very technically minded.
However I bit the bullet and removed the two sides of the pc. This revealed screws, which I undid and two lots of wiring with 'plugs'. I compared the new burner with the old one and removed the 'plugs' I then exchanged burners (checking that the master/slave option was the same) and put the plugs back into the new on. (They are different sizes so you can't get them the wrong way round). Replaced screws, plugged the pc back in again and it fired up first time. I had bought an oem burner so it was cheap as well as easy.
    Go for it !!

Changing the drive won't make any difference as it's a corrupt filter.....

It might just be that the data cable's come adrift from the motherboard.

How happy are you to open up your PC and take a look?

Yes my dvd drive wouldnt play any discs and i opened it up and the cable connecting it to the m/board had come loose so just plugged him back in
