At My Wits End-hope Someone Can Help

I hope someone can help me with a problem I have with my computer-windows xp. At the moment I am unable to play any discs, when I put in a disc, nothing happens, there is a message on screen that states there is no disc in! I have resolved this before by system restore and everything was fine, but when I have tried this now it won't let me click on to an earlier month (when it was working) my young son jhas told me he tried a disc some weeks ago and it didn't work then, so I need to go back a couple of months. Has anyone got any idea as to what I can do now or what the problem is, I have been at it for hours and am getting nowhere. I am not vey "up" on computers, which does not help!!! Any advice would be very much appreciated. Many thanks.

Have you looked in device manager - start/control panel/system/hardware/device manager . R/click on drive and see what it says -if its there. See if its in my computer - it may have died, they cost less than 20 quidand are easy to fit.

It might just be that the data cable's come adrift from the motherboard.

How happy are you to open up your PC and take a look?

  • do what spakkker says... They are cheap as chips and very easy to install... just make sure you unplug the pc from power supply first.

Chances are the cdrom.sys file is corrupted if a System Restore has resolved the problem in the past.

    Try this:

Thanks for your reply. It's stating error message code 37, does this mean anything to you? Sorry for being a bit thick.....it's just me and the kids so it's up to me to sort everything out! Jack of all trades and all that! Thanks again! x

if it's ide (which it probably will be) then I doubt this as they're a !!!!!! to pull out at the best of times.

Out of the drive itself then usually it is. But they're not necessarily as tightly fitting on the motherboard side. I have seen them come out when just moving the PC (twice in fact with different computers). Not necessarily happened here but you never know.

    Code 37
Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)
    Recommended resolution

The driver returned failure from its DriverEntry routine. Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.
