TUI don't automatically seat you adjacent free of charge. The system allocates seats as soon as you enter OLCI. They do try (sometimes) to sit you together but that could be across an aisle or infront/behind as well as adjacent. That doesn't happen all the time as can be seen by the amount of complaints. Given they had so many complaints they actually started limiting OLCI numbers so they had unreserved seats available for families that hadn't bothered to pay and were split. There's not many though, so it's not a tactic to rely on.
Yes I think they said once the plane is 70% allocated they stop online check in. We had this a few months ago, I tried checking in 5 days before the flight but it said online check not available, check in at the airport.

We still got allocated seats together at the airport checkin, both ways, right at the front as well! And "properly" together, ie no aisle or row separation
  • My point was clear. duchy understands it perfectly but is choosing to be deliberately abrasive which is becoming far to common here lately.

Well given the fuss that was made when a celebrity admitted she & her husband flew business class whilst their children flew cattle, I just gave my take on your post
  • For what it's worth Hubby & I, when we check in on line so can choose our seats for free, have found that choosing two aisle seats is better as it gives you both extra leg room.

That wouldn't work with charter and budget airlines though because they don't have free seat selection at OLCI. We always prebook two aisle seats.

    Yes it was.

I understood exactly what you were saying and I agree it was being twisted for the sake of argument.

Well if they aren't "together", using whatever definition of "together" you want, you can then select seats!

I did this 2 days ago, so I know what happens.

You go into online check in.

It then presents you with the seats it has allocated you.

If you're happy, you confirm check in with those seats, no charge.

If you don't like those seats, you have the option to pay to change them.
Any definition of seats together is not mine.
So it's not 'whatever definition of "together" I want'.

I'm hoping that what billy2shots mean is that he doesn't mind paying to sit next to the other adult in his party but feels children should be able to sit next to an adult in the party for free

But apart from a few low cost carriers that is what happens. The reputable airlines will seat children with an adult. However what they won't do is undertake that family groups won't be split e.g. One parent with two children but the other parent somewhere else. This seems to be the problem that parents feel the entire family should be seated together. (I saw a post recently elsewhere bitterly complaining that the parents were seated together and an older child elsewhere .....instead of one of the parents switching with the child they kicked off on the plane....... bonkers)

I should imagine a teenager would feel quite grownup not having to sit next to their mother for a couple or more hours. They'll inevitably have their earphones in anyway and not be any more aware of what's going on around them than they usually are.

Yet my list clearly states it is with Flybe, a budget airline.
It also states I flew with a different airline that seated one child next to a seat paying adult for free.

I’m not sure anyone is mentioning they expect an entire family to be seated together for free, that part has been made up by you.

The OP wanted a 13 year old not to be placed in a separate part of the plane and I was surprised my 7 year old could find himself seated away from a parent.
