I'm also on the 'start a cottage industry' thread and have made it my main 2008 Challenge to earn extra cash online during 2008. Just trying to drum up a little more enthusiasm over there as things have gone quiet :)

It's like your own little home-based business where you make/produce whatever you can (or like doing) and then sell it to generate income. I believe that traditionally it earned the cottage owner enough to run their cottage, which is what I would LOVE to be able to do (if I owned a cottage, of course!) I don't own a house of any description, so my 'cottage industry' is being set up in an attempt to earn me enough to generate savings. Now that all the debt has gone, I'm ultimately aiming to save enough to buy a little house with cash rather than try to get a mortgage.

There are also 'lifestyle businesses' which are like small businesses usually run by one person (or a couple, or partners, whichever), and their main aim is to earn enough to sustain their chosen lifestyle without having to be employed elsewhere. If you take the time to set up your cottage industry, it can be built up to incorporate whatever family lives there and earn enough to sustain thyeir lifestyle without having to get too commercial. I guess it helps if you are happy with a basic lifestyle and not aiming for millionaire status or spending a fortune on fancy designer labels and trinkets.

Whatever you choose to do, the point is that you have the freedom to choose for yourself in the first place. If it isn't enough, then you are free to choose how you supplement your income until your cottage industry or lifestyle business takes off. All that really matters is that you live within your means and make sure the taxman knows :) The link to the 'start a cottage industry' thread is in my signature, feel free to join us there :)
