They'll be able to trace what batch was delivered to which filling station.
In the event of a problem arising from the fuel, just think how many vehicles would be affected, and how quickly. It'd be trivial to track the source down - which would probably turn out to be tank contamination or mis-delivery, rather than a problem with a batch.
The only fuel that can be traced to source is aviation fuel. As you say it would be almost impossible to trace other fuels. Fuel bought on the spot market is usually mixed in with other refined product at storage depots.0 -

Don't think we're looking at contaminants just the source of the fuel.0 -
Contaminated fuel is usually water or crud that's passed the loading gantry filters or already in the garage storage tanks. All underground storage tanks have water in the bottoms as the water either gets in through faulty tank seals, water in the fuel when delivered or condensation often due to the fuel being warmer than the tank. The other type of contamination can be caused by a crossover when the driver of the road tanker delivers the wrong product to the underground garage tank.0

So what's your point? There are something like four oil refineries in the country. They make all the fuel for the country - all the brands use the output from these refineries. The only difference is the additive packs added when the tankers are loaded at the oil storage facilities of which there are only a few too.
Any quality control issues with fuel are likely to affect many different brands as it will be used by many of them before the issues are fixed.0 -

There you go then, proof. No mention of branded fuels only supermarkets.0
