Yes. Brother-in-law's jag was written off by using Tesco diesel over a long period. Everything contaminated requiring complete replacement of tank, pipes, pump and injectors; more than the car was worth (approx £2,000). Parts and fuel samples were sent away and the result that came back was, I think, silicon contamination from Tesco diesel accumulated over time.
Sounds an awful lot like an urban myth blending extreme repairs post-misfuelling with an isolated 2007 incident involving bad storage of petrol at a single depot.

  • Well I've no axe to grind against Tesco; just saying what happened. The car was worth around £2K; garage had already replaced the injectors once but they got contaminated again quite quickly from the rest of the system. BIL had to basically give the car to the garage to pay off their repair/investigation bill.
I've used Tesco petrol with no problem although I do use oil flush and do regular oil changes and also recently had to de-carbonise the throttle body. I understand the premium grade petrol like V-Power is a lot cleaner but more expensive too.
If I had a newer diesel I would only use the better quality fuel.

In the real world, my diesel on a long run will get approx 10% better economy from premium diesel than with non premium

Absolute nonsense. Petrol yes, diesel, no.

Is the more expensive petroo/diesel better for your car and makes it run better (cleaner?) with better MPG?

    Yes.

Does that offset the cost of it?

    No.

And I'm pretty sure the non premium at any place pretty much has the same additives (ie minimum allowed) so they can upsell their costly option.

And when those results of the fuel samples were shown to the judge, how much compensation did she rule Tesco must pay your Brother-in-law?

To make it worse Tesco are introducing electric charging points at their supermarkets. So people will be taking their brand new electric cars there and filling up with dirty electric. I wouldn't use supermarket electric.

I used to be firmly in the no difference camp but I now know I have significantly less diesel rattle when the engine is cold on both of my cars. There is a significant difference when the temperatures are really cold (below -10).
The cars in question are a 2010 Corsa 1.7 and a 2011 Audi 2.0 TT.
