For the record, all the schools I have worked in have to oven cook fish etc as part of the healthy eating regimes.
Primary schools are only allowed to serve fried chips once a week or less.0 -
Examples - Brewsters - our DS wanted a piece of chocolate cake, but we know they are huge and they come with either cream or ice cream. We asked for half a piece on its own - offered to pay the proper price, but no, they can't do that, so we said OK a full piece but no cream/ice cream - no - they can't do that. So we didn't bother at all.
Just today, wanted a quick lunch in Asda whilst shopping - they offered bacon baps or sausage baps - we asked for a bacon and sausage - but no they can't do that, it's one or the other - they said we'd have to buy both, put them together and throw away one of the buns.
The brewsters one is just stupid, talk about sending customers away unhappy, id have thought they would have said yes to the choclate cake with no ice cream/creamNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
In most of these school kitchens the staff cant even take the leftovers. Ive lost count of the food we had to throw that could have fed us for a week.
In the last kitchen I worked at it was like a stealth mission as the head cook wrapped food and snuck it out to our cars because she couldnt bear to throw stuff away!!0 -
I've worked in a kitchen recently and the ban on taking food home is health and safety. If you didn't store/reheat it properly and became ill, you might sue! I know that doesn't entirely explain the fish boy incident, but some have raised the issue of taking left-overs home.
Not saying I agree with it, I mourn the sight of roast beef or freshly made treacle sponge in the bin! :sad:0 -

Ahahahahahah Fish Boy!!!:rotfl::rotfl:I'll have to tell him that:T
Anway I had a reply from the school
"
A misunderstanding may have occurred in this instance, as our catering staff would have been more than happy to sell ***** a piece of fish at the end of the lunch break.
The Warwickshire County Caterers Heath and Safety guidelines specify that any left over food from the canteen is to be discarded at the end of the day."
Er so what was the misunderstanding??? They would have been happy to sell it to him -OR they have to throw it away- I'm even more confused now!!!

Hmm...a slightly worthless statement (most likely copied & pasted off something somewhere)
So, it depends what they class the end of the day. However, I would have thought that would be classed as the end of lunchtime since the food had been prepared, cooked & been out.
Some of those on this thread that work in these places should be able to decypher it.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
'Some of those on this thread that work in these places should be able to decypher it.'
They are explaining the wastage whilst at the same time admitting that there was no justifiable reason why the child was denied the fish. The term 'misunderstanding' implies that it could have been on either/both side(s) thereby suggesting that the child MAY not have been clear, in turn blurring any blame. Some may see this differently.;)
elise, don't tell his friends!!
And yes, some teens do indeed have 'hollow leg syndrome', and not always boys!0 -
reminds me of a funny story,
myself and a few friends went into a 'lovely' greasy spoon a few years back, first up to order with the lady was my friend and the conversation went as follows:
'bacon sandwich please'
'sorry we have run out of bread rolls'
'Ah ok, well i happy to have which sliced bread'
'sorry don't do slice bread'
'ah, err ok, well i will have a full English then'
'yeah sure, you want toast or fried bread with that!
a slight pause while the comment sinks in before he just laughs and say toast, and sure enough, toast did come with the breakfast.
i wonder where she thought toast came from :-)0 -
sad fact. but do you know how much supermarkets waste each day?
i used to work for A**I (im not sure if i can say the full name.
Every day we had to do date checks , and if things went out of date that day we took them off sale and chucked it.
fresh food, bread, cakes, vegetables, eggs, milk etc etc it all got chucked.
EVERY DAY we filled a small skip with the waste!!! I even said id take some, but no you can get sacked for that on the spot.
I suggested they ask local homeles shelters to come down each morning and take anything they wanted , but again... no...
bizaare. would have thought the publicity would have done them good..0
