Monthly gas price? 3 bed semi, 2 adults

  • A fixed tariff does not mean you can use as much gas as you want for a fixed monthly amount, it just means the unit cost will not change during the duration of the tariff.

You are burying your head in the sand, get readings and do the calculations, don't forget daily standing charges

Once you get you annual consumption figures, put them into a comparison website.

As for comparing your usage, there are too many variables, insulation level, age of the property and type of construction, detached or terrace, how may rooms you heat and how you set your thermostat and TRVs.

I’m on a fixed tariff, I renewed about a month ago with British Gas. I’m consumed as I’ve always paid £21 for the last 2 years, so what’s changed?
Price of gas has nt gone up much if at all if you shop around .
.BG were doing 2.8p kwh on one of their tariffs ( in my area ) and so are Scottish Power (dual fuel deals ) and Zog Energy are my cheapest gas only deal at 2.9 p kwh.
So check the comparison sites and arm yourself with an accurate annual kwh usage before you do to get a true idea of your actual true monthly direct debit for the year.
Bear in mind a colder or longer than normal winter can really increase the direct debit, eg "Beast from the East " in March a few years ago increased most users DD.
It is the total price for the year which counts and that would include daily standing charges, vat , discounts

Two dozen posts in and we still don't know the OP's consumption figures or how long it took to run up the debt :-(.

It's not as though he's not been on the Forum - started a thread late yesterday.

  • If you've been with British Gas for a couple of years, they WILL have sent you an Annual Statement at some point, which tells you how much Gas and Lec you've used.

I can't say for certain if its based on the ACTUAL reading that as far as i'm aware the energy company takes once a year. But i suspect it is.

Look through your emails, or paper bills, or log into your online account to find it.

I suspect the key words here are "ACTUAL meter reading" - and there aren't any.

Probably the standing charge plus costs have risen.

You need to know the actual usage, my case 7929 kw per year non smart won have one and detached, pay £24 per month with OFTM 2.9p unit rate. Where lowest at British Gas starts from £33.82 per month with unit rate 3.688p and standing charge per day 31.442p per day whether used or not!

Interesting, however, as it turns out, By law, energy suppliers are required to take ACTUAL readings at least every 2 years.

Op says he has been with BG for at least that long, therefore i'm sure there ARE actual meter readings.

This a a fact sheet from ofgem https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/ofgem-publications/42361/5875-factsheetmeteraccuracy-and-billingdisputes-pdf although the supplier doesn't have to take meter readings himself, he can ask the customer to provide them.

As far as I can remember British Gas managed to get the meter inspection period extended to five years so it's quite possible that the reading period can get extended well past the 2 years, especially if customers cannot be bothered to check their meters and submit readings.

Many think that if the bill is underestimated then they'll get away with not having to pay for what they've used, not realising that it's just ramping up a big heap of arrears. It then comes as a really big surprise when the meter does actually get read that their DD has to be revised upwards to cover the arrears as well as their ongoing consumption.

Unfortunately there are some customers - the OP seems to be one - who don't actually understand the concept of reading a meter, checking a bill and getting it corrected if it's wrong. Neither do they understand that a DD is a payment toward their costs and not the bill.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
