Monthly gas price? 3 bed semi, 2 adults
So we’ve been with British Gas for a couple of years since moving in and always paid around £20-23 a month for gas. All of a sudden I’m being told I’m going to be paying £42 a month!
Can I just find out from some others what they pay for a similar house and people. Many thanks

Are those actual billed amounts or just the monthly Direct Debit ?
If it's the DD amount, does that actually cover your usage according to your bills or are you in arrears ?
How often have you been submitting actual readings ?0 -
What you pay is based on how much gas you use. It's not priced per month, you just pay a monthly direct debit to (hopefully) cover what you use.
In the summer you would pay for more than you would actually use in gas & in winter you would pay less as you'd have built up a credit in the summer.
For reference, I live alone in a small 2 bed terrace & pay £49 a month for gas & electric. I have a credit of about £100 which will be used up over the winter.
Have you ever given them any meter readings & are you on their standard (expensive) tariff or a fixed deal one?0 -
I’m on a fixed tariff, I renewed about a month ago with British Gas. I’m consumed as I’ve always paid £21 for the last 2 years, so what’s changed?0

Are your bills estimates or meter readings? Has your £21 led to underpayments which have now been corrected? Is the rate on your new fixed tariff more than on the one that's just ended?
You cannot work out what is happening purely from a monthly direct debit which may be too high or too low.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I pay 82 per month for gas and 65 for electric0

What the cheapest way of paying for gas and electric. And who is generally the cheapest provider?0

I’m £219 in debit about to go over the winter period. Is my £42 monthly amount that’s just been adjusted from £21 likely to go up again after another review ??0

Only you can work out what has happened but you need to look at your bills and calculate how much gas you use in a year and how much this has cost. DD amounts are only an estimated.
To work out if £42 a month is going to be enough you need to add your debt of £219 to your yearly cost and hope that BG is allowing you a year to pay off the debt.
When you have done your sums you can then estimated whether £42 a month is enough. For example if your annual costs come to £375 then you will have built up the debt of £219 over the last two years and your payments should have been £32 a month. In this case assuming that you have a year to pay off the debt your payments should be £50 a month. (£375 + £219 = £594)0 -
How many months did it take to get to £219 debit?
Divide £219 by the answer, add £21 and that might give you a vague indication of what your monthly payments should have been.0 -
