slow or old laptop?

hello
ok my laptop is around 4 years old it runs so slow done everything i know how to do,also re installed aol twice recently as couldnt connect never had trouble before

i have packard bell,easy note,aol silver,windows xp
1.26ghz
224mb of ram
total virtual memory 575,18. available 76.97mb
total physical memory 256.50mb. available 20.41 mb

i have mcafee personal firewall and an aol one
loaded a free one of here but took it off as everything went haywire

so after all that please someone do i need to update my laptop or is there anything i can do to improve mine

thanks for any help i havnt a clue

    Yes very easy if you are using a router. Google for the procedure if using a modem.

    Personally, at least double the ram to 512Mb, possibly 1Gb.

    Also, i'd do a full reinstall of windows, with the latest drivers etc, then go to www.filehippo.com, download AVGfree and any other bits and bobs you need, and i'd probably stick with the standard windows firewall.

    you only need 1 firewall extra causes conflict.if old ltop with xp use m/s firewall...increase memory,cruical site will advise..go for max [probally pair set]
    goto filehippo.com for freeware software...zee
    ps ignore aol and use firefox...faster

    blimey i dont have a clue how to do any of that

    right ive ordered a 512mb, will there be instructions what to do with it when it arrives
