It doesn't really fit this thread, but whenever the custom of playing the National Anthem at the cinema is mentioned, I remember an interview with Terence Davies, the director. His Irish granny loved to take him to the cinema, but being a Republican, would drag him out just before the end so they didn't have to stand for the Anthem. He would lie in bed imagining the endings of the films.............and so his career path was set!
We were republicans (small r - the English variety) but my parents insisted we 'show respect' so that our views were taken more seriously! So we always stood for the Anthem! And I didn't become a film director!4 -
I remember having to learn land of hope and glory for a primary school concert mid 1970s and my dad taught me another version, I don't remember it now but something about land of soap and water, mother washed my feet father...... didn't make me popular with the already temperamental music teacher as the wrong words got stuck in my head 😳 and I'm tone deaf!Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage - Anais Nin4

I think that the dropping of the National Anthem at cinemas and at close of play on TV - not that there is a close of play in these days of round-the-clock entertainment - is because it was supposed to be respectful, and respect is out of fashion.
And what is it about fathers teaching us the wrong words to things? My young brother was pretty annoyed when they laughed at him at school when everyone was singing Twinkle, twinkle little star and he was singing Dad's version.......

Sorry to be off subject, I'm so excited to have been allowed back into MSE at long last. I don't mind the layout but find that loads of features are now missing and everything takes longer. Still, someone somewhere is rubbing his hands (yes, I'm being sexist here) and saying proudly, "Yes, we've changed everything. It's called 'progress'."

Oh monnagran - I did 😂 - I think I prefer your dad’s version 😆
it is lovely to see you & glad you persevered & rejoined us.I have to say I don’t think you are being sexist at all - it almost appears that they have gone for the Male youth market rather than the people who actually use it 👿. I really dislike the ‘Thanks’ button & I so miss the emojis 😞 They appear to have thrown the baby out with the bath water & only 10 posts per page & all that wasted space on the right 😠
oh well we are here 🥳

My dad's version was "Startle, startle little twink, how I wonder what you think". We never got past the second line.2021 - mission declutter and clean - 0/20214 -
Hello, I have been lurking, pleased to see Monnagran back, I wondered where you had gone. I know two verses of the National Anthem thanks to having a rather Hattie Jaques style guide leader. I also have numerous aprons as I do on the rare occasion that I bake am rather messy! Oops😄😱

I also remember as a 10 yr old all the rest of my GLB group( anyone remember the GLB) laughing as I lustily but not tunefully sang ‘Old Mans Eye “ for Auld Lang’s syne ,still remember the shame !4 -
Not only remembered Sue, I was a member. Awful uniform but I learned a lot through doing the badges. Went to some hilarious camps too.I believe that friends are quiet angels

I’m Jealous ,desperately wanted to go to camp ,but my father wouldn’t allow it !

i was a fairy at the Annual Show at the Royal Albert Hall in about 1958 ,

Sue, those Albert Hall Shows were great, weren't they? We used to go up to London for the weekend and enjoyed the Saturday shows, but we often played truant from the Sunday service at Westminster and slid off for a bit of sight-seeing.
I was lucky. My mother was the captain of our company (18th Southampton) and she was a rebel of the first order, so we got up to all sorts of unauthorised fun.
You must have come a bit after me. My last London Weekend was about 1956.
Sorry everyone for the private reminiscences. It's so nice to come across someone who shares some of my childhood experiences.I believe that friends are quiet angels
