Need some advice motorcycle purchase
Good afternoon, I hope everyone is well
This is my first post on mse I hope someone can give me some guidance on my situation.
So on October 2nd 2019 (yesterday) I purchased a motorcycle from a private sale (saw it on auto trader) the bike seemed good nothing major that I can see (I’m not the best when I comes to vehicles and I don’t have any friends that are experienced) so we agreed to £2,600 and I paid via bank transfer, 20 mins into the drive home the bike overheats and starts leaking coolant ( I asked about the liquid when I was viewing the bike he said it was just washed which didn’t seem suspicious as the bike was clean) I pulled over and turned it off so it could cool down, it refused to start which left me stranded 15 miles from home at 2in the morning. I ended up pushing the bike home (bike weighs 270kg and I way 65) so I got home at 6 am, yes 4 hour of pushing! And now the bike will not turn on, nor will the starter even engage
So today I called him and explained the situation and he completely flipped, started cursing me and telling me I purposely damaged the bike and that he would not be refunding me or even attempting to help finding a solution. Any advice you be greatly appreciated

So let me get this straight, you purchased the bike at 0130hrs?
You must be well fit to push a bike at nearly 4mph for 4hrs.0 -
Any advice you be greatly appreciated
Private sales are Caveat Emptor ... the only requirements are that the seller has good title to sell the goods and that the goods are accurately described, including any details discussed prior to sale.
If the seller has lied (and you can prove this on the balance of probabilities) then a Letter Before Action and then a court claim may be your only option.
Can you confirm that the address from which you purchased the bike is the address to which it was registered?0 -
Assuming this is not a tall tale - If you pushed it home in the dark and kept the lights on the battery will be flat. Talking of flat you must have had a very level or downhill route back home as my bike weighs similar to yours, I also weigh about the same as you and there is no way I'd be able to push it up anything but the slightest incline for any distance.
If you put it on the centre stand in top gear, can you turn the engine over by turning the back wheel, if you can then it's not seized from overheating.0 -
@DUTR that’s when I picked up the bike, the deal was made at 21:30, unfortunately I work all day and only have a few hours at night free.
@DOAM
He advertised it as no issues what so ever, I have contacted autotrader and they sent me a copy of the ad he removed. Yes the address was his home0 -
@nearlyold, it’s an automatic scooter and the ignition was not on as I was pushing it back, only when I attempted to start it I’d turn the key0

If the vehicle is sold why wouldn't he remove the ad?
If at the time of sale he knew of no issues then he described as he knew.0 -
@DUTR what I meant is that the ad said there are no issues, overheating and a coolant leak are quite major which he failed to disclose. I will follow the advice of letter before claim and hope for the best, I have a £2,600 bike sitting outside dead. But it’s a lesson, next time I will use a main dealer with warranty0

OP, first you need to ignore the usual unhelpful, sucking through teeth comments always made in cases like this. This is not your fault.
That said, you are unlikely to get any joy from pursuing the seller although you can try. What bike is it? If you say you might get some more helpful comments on what might be wrong. You could also find a forum covering the make; most are covered somewhere on the interweb. If it's just leaking coolant/overheating there may not be much wrong; it might be something like the water pump or even a loose hose. Try topping up the coolant and look for any obvious leaks. If it's completely dead try jump starting it from a car. If no luck then you could take it to a local workshop or even ask them to pick it up (most will be used to doing this) - an experienced mechanic should spot what's wrong quickly.
Good luck0 -
270 KG scooter? My zzr1100 only weighs 250 KG.
And I weigh 100 KG, I wouldn't be able to push mine on level ground 16 miles in 4 hours.
Wind up post.0 -
Burgman 650 is around 270KG so perhaps it's one of them?
Kill switch inadvertently knocked off while pushing the lump home?0
