my daughter

hi
my daughter will be 16 in feb and has decided she will be leaving full time school
she has agreed though to join me at adult education classes, i don't have any qualifications and so she has agreed that we will get them together
where would we stand with regard to her claiming benefits?
thanks

If your daughter leaves full time education child benefit for her will stop. Your tax credits for her would also stop. Depending how many hours she works when she finds a job will usually depend on if she will have to pay the course fees for the adult education classes. If she is not working she would have to sign on and claim JSA but would have to be actively looking for work to claim anything. Sometimes these classes also have a lower age limit of 18 or 21.
One day I might be more organised...........

If she is leaving full time education you will lose child benefit and child tax credit for her. Has she registered with connexions?
She will probably have to register as unemployed and sign on, take part in work focused interviews etc. and be willing to drop any courses should a suitable vacancy arise.

I'm not 100% sure of the situation these days tbh.

Under 18 year olds cannot usually get Job Seekers Allowance, more details can be found at this link: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/Employedorlookingforwork/DG_10018757

    Hi,
If your child leaves school at 16 you will be entitled to claim CB until the'terminal date' probably September. If your child registered with connections you will receive CB for 20 weeks as the 'extension period' These rules also apply to child tax credits.

Your child could also go in to an entry to employment program or further education, you would keep CB and CTC until she was19 in that case.

Job seekers allowanceis not payable to under 18's unless they can prove'hardship'

    Hope that helps

    Hi,

I think you'll find the terminal date for someone leaving in February is the 28th February
  • Hi bigbill, the post says the child will be 16 in Feb, not leaving Feb, usual leaving time is May / June which would make terminal date Sept.

An entry to employment program can be an apprentice scheme or other approved further learning. Whilst learning the child may also qualify for EMA upto £ 30 per week.

Ask at your local CAB or job centre

The terminal dates are whichever one of these occurs first after they have ceased relevant education or approved training.

    1. the last day in February

    2. the last day in May

    3. the last day in August

    4. the last day in November

My mistake I though the original post said?

"My daughter will be 16 in feb and has decided she will be leaving full time school"

    AND

    Your post number 7 said?

"If your child leaves school at 16"

That would be when she is 16 in February would it not?
