Your honesty did not weaken your case at all.
Far from it, by saying you didn't remember rather than guessing (like the OP of this thread did) your complaint actually became far more convincing.

Maybe I should have been clearer in what I said...

"guessed as in branch but as I didn't even know I had a policy, I said that I obviously couldn't say for sure!"

My response was something along the lines of "At a guess I would say in branch but couldn't say for sure. I don't remember having a policy so to be honest, I don't know"

Or, rather, have you simply forgotten agreeing to it eighteen years ago?

    Quite possibly

You should certainly not have guessed about the circumstances of the sale, because if you are wrong it will doubtless weaken your complaint.

I didn't actually guess, I responded with "I would guess at in branch as I don't know

Incidentally, it's a myth sponsored by Claim Companies that PPI was routinely added without the knowledge and permission of the customer...

You do realise that PPI on a credit card is only paid when your account has a balance?

    Of course

If you weren't seeing a clearly marked PPI payment on your monthly statements then it's likely you didn't pay much, if any PPI.

Did you always pay off the outstanding balance each month?

I was at University at the time so quite unlikely

If you were a student when you were (mis) sold the PPI why didn't you simply complain on that basis?

No point having PPI if you had no job to lose!!
