Boiler won't repressure?

Options
We've just decorated and had the rads taken off the walls to paper behind. One values has had a slight leak, which isn't in itself a problem as we can catch the drips.

But what's happened now is, the system has lost so much water the pressure has dropped below the min that the boiler needs to operate and has switch off everything so we have no hot water.
This shouldn't be a problem, just repressure the system with the charging loop. Problem is, when I open the two values on the loop nothing happens??

We have full pressure through the taps and I can't find any stop values on the pipe that runs to the loop.
I can't get hold of the guy that does our plumbing as he's away on honeymoon...

Can anyone suggest what I'm missing before I call another plumber and he points at something blindingly obvious that I've overlooked...

Thanks...

  • Have you checked the isolating valves for return and flow are not closed?

I can't find any other values on the supply pipe. There only about half a meter showing before the loop and I've never had to use anything else in the past. I know the system was repressured after the rads were taken off and he didn't have to move anything around the boiler... Which is why I'm stumped!
  • It's possible that one or both valves on the loop have their handles turning on the spindle, rather than turning the spindle. Try taking the handles off and operating the valves with a spanner.

You'll also want to bleed the radiator as you fill.

Somebody else on this site had the same problem, one of the plastic caps on the taps had been fitted on the wrong way so that when turned to the " on " position it was actually off, worth checking,do not forget to bleed the rads.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

The values on the loop are working fine, but I have taken the handles off and turned them with a spanner, no change.

I can't find any other valve on either the supply or return pipes, so I'm stumped.

I'll call a plumber out on Monday!

Did you try setting the two valves in all four possible combinations of position in case one was open and the second closed?

You are giving up too easily!

Remove the filling loop and find out which position for each valve is ON.

    Simples.

I'd have to drain the system before I could remove the loop and I don't have the right hose. It's a micro bore system.

    Rubbish!

Filling loops should be removed after re-pressurising the system although most are left in place.

You definitley do not need to drain the system to remove the filling loop, that is what the valves are for, but if you want to pay a plumber to do such a simple task for you, then go ahead and waste your money.

Post a picture, as it is worth a thousand words if you need help with the valves.
