My Mum is in her 70s and has recently moved in with me. We don't have a landline and she has never had a mobile but says she wanted one just to make occasional phone calls and to send/receive texts. Can anyone recommend a phone that would be fairly easy to use (Mum would like one with big buttons if possible). I'm also not sure whether pay as you go or contract would be best as her mobile needs are very different to mine and I've had contracts for as long as I can remember.

I'd greatly appreciate any advice.

Thank-you! I had no idea you could get sim only contracts. Would she just pay for sending texts on that type of contract?

Get her a Doro branded phone, they are aimed at those who need a simple phone with relatively large buttons

Agreed, here's one SIM free https://www.argos.co.uk/product/5783951 just under £25

Then as suggested either PAYG or monthly rolling contract, obviously the amount of data is unimportant, more call minutes & test

Plus of course reception where you live. Maybe start as PAYG and see how it turns out? Using a "brand" she knows, such as Asda / Tesco

    Doro.
Big buttons, easy to see and use.

My future MIL (late 70s) has one and she raves about it, means she can text my OH and bug him where ever she is :D

Sim only contracts include a set number of minutes, a data allowance (which you wouldn't need) and a large or even unlimited number of text messages.

Take a look at the mobiles section of the MSE site for cheap sim only contracts. Some tie you up for 12 months while others are a rolling monthly basis.
