This is a smartphone that I purchased through E Bay from a member with good feedback. It has no sim card but I understand I should be able to connect to the internet without one. I have checked my code and wi fi connection and these are both OK. Could it be I need to change something in settings. My wifes phone connects to the internet with no problem so It would seem this aspect is not the problem. Anything I could try . The phone does bring up my virgin media settings OK it just will not connect to the IP address.

The fact your wife's phone connects to the wireless doesn't mean anything, its far more likely you've got something configured on the router that will block anything unrecognised (MAC IP filtering or similar) from connecting. If the other phone is recognised then that will connect. This won't until you add it to the filter list.

Presuming that is what is set up, which is most likely because you wouldn't get as far "obtaining IP address" if it was the wrong wireless key.
  • I am having the same issue with my second hand Motorolo Moto G 2nd generation phone which keeps coming up with the message obtaining IP address. My problem mirrors the OP's. How do I add to the filter list I am on Virgin Media or is there another solution. sorry I am not technically adept. Thank you.

Restart the Virgin router is a step I'd perform before throwing the phone at the wall.

I had an older Samsung that wouldn't connect to the home wifi without a SIM card being inserted - I solved the problem by buying a PAYG O2 SIM with £10 credit which didn't run out.
  • Extraordinary.. I also purchased an unblocked smart phone off E Bay and I am faced with the same situation. My smartphone picks up my home wi fit and accepts the code/password. Then it keeps going around with the message obtaining IP address which it never does. I have tried putting it next to the router and pressing the wi fit button. Again it does seems to recognise the smartphone but will not connect. Maybe I need to change the settings on the smartphone somewhere or should I try and put it back to factory settings. Before I attempt doing this perhaps some feedback or other suggestions will be really welcome as I am Stuck. Does a SIM card make all the difference as at the moment my Smartphone has not got one. I was waiting to check the WiFi connection was working before purchasing one, but maybe this is what is needed.

I am sorry to harp on about this issue. I still keep getting the message obtaining IP address. I have tried various suggestions but with no avail. I can't seem to get into my Motorola moto phone to change the setting to static . The phone shows no IP address. I am not sure it buying a sim card would solve the problem and that could be a waste of money unless it is definitely the answer. What good would it do to reset the phone to factory settings. The previous owner had an internet connection so why has it changed. Any feedback will be helpful and interesting in the hope of rectifying. Otherwise I will need to try and get my money back which I will be able to do if the smartphone is faulty, but I am not sure that it is.

The only other thing you can do is reset the phone. You never know.

Or take it to another wireless network, even a public one like Tesco or McDonalds. If it connects there the phone is fine and the issue is with your configuration.

If it's fine on public wifi take it to a friend/relative's house (or stand outside in range of the signal if you must) and try to connect. Again if it connects and is happy, the issue is with your home setup.
  • In your router configuration, how many IPv4 addresses are available for DHCP? How many are in use? Could it be that there are none available to be allocated?
