I was a workshop foreman and have known mechanics like that. Fortunately, only one was employed at our place, but not for long.

And don't we know it, you're worse than uncle Albert with his during the war.

Because of the combinations you can end with. A much more suitable tow vehicle which is heavier will end up with a lighter trailer than potentially not so suitable tow vehicle. E.g. a Land rover, great towing vehicle but heavy compared to a smaller less well suited vehicle.

Yeah you do end up with the weird situation that you can tow a trailer with a hatchback but not a pickup truck, but there's no way to solve that without the rules being totally bonkers. Gross Train Weight seems like the easiest to manage and test.

But, of course, that hatchback must be rated to pull that trailer legally.

Obviously, but the pickup would undoubtedly be the better vehicle for the towing.

Take a newer Nissan Navara - 3500kg towing capacity, but with a GVW of about 3000kg (I can't find an actual number) on it's own means anyone without an E will only be able to tow 750kg. However a 1.7 diesel Astra with a 1400kg limit but a GVW of 2040kg means you could tow nearly twice as much, legally, with the Astra.

It seems bizarre but there's really no other way of doing it. Much better to just get the B+E license and then use whatever you want.
