    It's also pretty much impossible to prove when something was built, unless it was stamped onto the frame. Even then how much of a trailer could you replace before it became a new trailer?
    The rules tighten up over time, but are generally grandfathered.

    From the state of most I'd assume they were build much more than 5 years ago, and have probably never been serviced. Why would you if it's only going to the tip a couple of times a year?

    Good shout. They still sell spare parts from the whole range.
    Did it come with any paperwork? I'm not sure when it started but they have a register and add trailers to TER to help them get recovered if stolen.

    I used to work for a manufacturer of trailers and i can tell you that they all fit aftermarket parts to in-house framework.
    Most use hitches from either Knott Or Alko. These are usually matched to axles from the same manufacturers as it makes linking brakes up easier.

    Drawbars are either folded 4mm plate, or 3mm wall box section. The rest of the chassis being 2mm folded plate with 1mm folded plate for the sides/back/tailgate.

    This is one of life's b4st4rd situations where you're caught between a rock and a hard place. Keen to keep your job/not questioning what you see around you + not knowing + not knowing what you don't know + trusting.

    Life is full of pitfalls, I'm sorry you found one.

    It's easy for those with more knowledge/experience to say "you should've known" - and, I'm sure you'll agree with them that you should've/could've... but getting to find what you need to know, especially in an employment situation where you don't want to be seen "looking a numpty" or "being a nuisance" is hard.

    No, not that strange.

    If the total train weight is under 3500kg, you can tow anything that doesn't go over the car's max.
    If the total train weight would be over 3500kg, you can tow a max 750kg trailer.

    As others have said, it's the responsibility of the driver to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy. I was watching one of the many traffic police programmes recently where a driver was nicked for a defective trailer, he phoned his work to say he couldn't drive it and they sent one of their mechanics out. Instead of trying to rectify the problem he hitched the trailer to his vehicle. As soon as he drove off the police stopped him and nicked him too.

    Because of the combinations you can end with. A much more suitable tow vehicle which is heavier will end up with a lighter trailer than potentially not so suitable tow vehicle. E.g. a Land rover, great towing vehicle but heavy compared to a smaller less well suited vehicle.

    I was a workshop foreman and have known mechanics like that. Fortunately, only one was employed at our place, but not for long.
    I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
