Cheap Android Tablet with GRUNT

I am trying to find a powerful Android Tablet (8" or 10") with some grunt for gaming for my nephew.
The market seems very complex, they quote quad core but rarely the CPU
Is there a guide somewhere for the CPU's ?
I assume memory is also a factor, some have it on an SD card, I assume this makes it slower?
What about version of OS, all these daft names that are sweet things, do any make it run fast or rather are there any dogs that make is slow.
Obviously I want to pay as little as possible but it needs to have some grunt.

Quad core is the CPU's capabilities, there's nothing else in them that could possibly be quad-core! Much like a desktop computer it's the number of "brains" if you like. Power wise, a mobile phone that runs Android will be the same as the tablet.
Most versions of Tablet Android are 1Gb in memory, that's pretty much the minimum. SD storage is an entirely different thing, that's how much space Android can use to store stuff - apps, data, etc. From Android 6 onwards you can format SD cards in such a way that it looks like one big drive of 72Gb, instead of 8Gb internal and 64Gb external (or whatever).
Version of OS, every version of Android from version 1.5 upwards was given a confectionery-themed name. They are not "daft" names, that's the way it is. The latest you'll probably be able to get today is Android 9 (Pie), then prior to that was Android 8 (Oreo), 7 (Nougat) and 6 (Marshmellow). Don't get a tablet that runs anything older than Marshmellow.0 -
The android os names are pretty daft, I agree. The only sensible part is that they are in alphabetical order. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

They've stopped using them now. The latest version is just Android 10 with no name.Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. Have been converted to the "budget to zero" concept and use YNAB for all monthly budgeting and long term goals.0

I did not put a price because my goal is to first understand what I am paying for, so I hoped someone had experience of these and posted from their experience.
He started off on Iphone 4s, 6s plus, Ipad 2018, new updates now make the games slower. Another iPad is out of the question, so I figured it would be worth asking about Android tablets, it can be 8" but the key is grunt.
All I see quoted is top end Samsungs but they cost same as iPads.0 -
Good luck in persuading him to move from the Apple OS to Android, especially if all his mates are on Apple devices0

The 2018 iPad is actually pretty good value for money. I know that's strange, as it's Apple, but honestly it's good value. I paid around £230 for mine, and I cannot see anything better for the money.
Aside from a fairly expensive iPad Pro, I cannot see where you'd move on to?No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
