Is £3,700 plus VAT a reasonable price to replace a shower tray?

  • Carrot007 - thanks - this has certainly put things into perspective - how long did your entire bathroom take? . My £3,700 quote equates to £4,440 including VAT. Them supplying the tray and door at a total of £472 inc VAT, the rest of the amount quoted being for the labour and materials. Materials being the studs timber base and top board ply and the grout and silicone seals and rubbish removal/4 yard skip. Does anyone have an idea how long this work as they have listed would take?

Baring in mind we have not seen your proposed works so shooting in the dark.

As you describe it two days one man.

Costings, I have done full refurbs for under £5K but also done plus 15K

as above with no dimensions, brands etc being made available, we would be looking at approx £1995 + vat area
this is for similar sounding works but there are variables as pointed already to consider

  • Thank you all for your help and guidance - you have saved me from a very costly mistake. I am going to scrap all three and start again. The second two quotes, I checked the post codes of the addresses and one post code does not exist and the other one the company name does not exist at the address stated. As I said before, neither can be found in Yell, Thomson etc etc or face book either. I have also noticed on all the quotes, the post codes are in lower case, and no using upper case for the road names etc. and other details too. Not how I was taught typing many many years ago. My final question is, would check a trade or rated people or the other one be a good place to start again, or just to find other local companies direct. Thank you again, I now have much more of an understanding, in the region of what costs to expect.

I'm up north, but was quoted £2k labour to fit a full ensuite from scratch in a bare room so yours sounds crazy money to me....

You have got three quotes, effectively from the same Person.

Person A wants to do the job and has given you a quote for £700 plus vat.
He has 'invented' at least one other company (very easy to do now as letterheads can easily by put together on a PC. his mate has probably sent in another quote at a higher price than the £3700.
therefore, you will opt for the quote at £3700 as it is the cheapest.

You said one has allowed for a 4 yard skip? Struth how big is the shower tray?

I fit bathrooms for a living and this is how I would price it.

On my experience it is highly unlikely that the shower screen and door will be removed without them being damaged. Normally the carriers buckle as you try to get them off the wall. So you need to allow for a new door and screen. So in materials you have got £600 including adhesives, mastic etc. Getting a shower tray in and out is normally a two man lift as they are difficult to handle on your own. So allow half a day for two guys to get the old tray out. The tray then needs to be put in and allowed to dry over night (assuming it is put in using an adhesive of some sort). So that is 1 day for 2 guys.
Following day, you can use a rapid set adhesive to set the tiles in. A couple of hours later, it can be grouted and then a couple of hours later, the cubicle can go in (again a two man job).

So you have two men for two days at say £200/day each. That's £800 plus vat

Allow £100 plus vat for waste removal.

So realistically, you are at £1700 for a supply and fit price.

So at £3700 plus vat he is trying to con you.

You need to ask around for recommendations for plumbers, bathroom fitters etc and start the process again.

Great advice from Phil as always

  • Thank you phill99 (and ceredigion in a previous post) both suggesting they are effectively the same people. This is all falling into place now... Looking at all 3 quotes side by side and in detail, there are many other obvious similarities between them of which I did not notice these before – not just the post codes etc. I appreciate the explanation of the process and helping me to understand what to expect as well as the realistic costs. Having some knowledge regarding these works and learning to look at the detail has given me confidence to start this process again. We are always told to get 3 quotes but obviously I obtained these in the wrong way to start off. I will ask around for recommendations and do my research and, I will search and contact local companies direct to quote and then compare all of them. This could have been a very costly experience for me – and more… Thank all you very much.

If you dont have any personal recommendations to go on it may well be worth popping into your local plumbing merchant (Grahams, Plumb Centre, Jewsons etc) and asking if they recommend anyone, it isnt perfect but its a start
