Just connect the modem to the router using the Ethernet cable. The modem/router can be left on 24/7 and your PC will automatically be on-line without having to connect as you do now.

Your modem connects to the ISP, not the router. RTFM

Goto your routers setup page -
    maybe 192.168.1.1 or something similar
    and input your Virgin username
jujitsu@virgin.net OR whatever it really is
    then your Virgin account password
and that's it - you never need to log in again - unless you reset your router

Is that why you can't use punctuation? ;)

Don't connect the USB! Don't use any modem software on your PC! When you sort that then there's a proper setup to start from. At the moment you've probably got conflicts all over the place and impossible to tell where the signals are going. If your PC is connected to a router there should be neither modem or ISP software on your PC at all.

"Internet" cable to modem, modem to router, router to PC. You should have NO other connections with this equipment.

    Thats not right mate.

Cable modems use MAC adress verification, not username/password like ADSL

Connect your cable modem to your router (the internet port)

Run the setup disk for the router, if its a new wireless router 99% will run through the setup and configure your connection for you, some older wireless routers will need you to configure it with the ethernet cable before you can setup the wireless connection.

Cable modems are basicly plug & play!
