And of course we're not getting any of the story first hand as it's through the OP who was a friend of the deceased.

    Very good point
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

I think the op has been changed but I can't find the first version. I'm sure I read it differently. - but it might have been my error of course and I just read it wrong.... I just think there's so much more than is being told. Yes they were seeing each other for 10 years but only moving in together next week, was there a reason, did they see each other once a week, once a month. Etc. No one really knows.

When did the legal separation happen.... The solicitor would have advised them to make a will, sign girlfriend as nok. But he chose not too.... Why?

Was a financial agreement in place at separation, or was it still to be sorted at divorce. Did the wife own any of the husband stuff when they split. Too much guessing too know.

Definitely too much guessing and not enough info

My detective (LOL) skills make me think they were living together though, due to the op saying that the wife was taking little things from the flat like the iron. Its the way 'the' flat is referred to, not 'his' flat IYSWIM

I am clearly overthinking this though and have no idea what I am talking about more than likely hahah

Nobody can stop your friend going to the funeral. If I was you I would go with her to support her. When my dad died,(my parents were divorced) his family did not even tell me I found out through a friend. I went to see the vicar who was doing the service and he made sure I was mentioned. Ten years with someone is a long time and your friend needs to say her goodbyes.

    Good detective skills! :T

If the husband hated the wife though none of this makes any sense. If the husband and the girlfriend were joint tenants why did she let the wife in and watch her remove everything. Then complain to the op.

My theory however is that they may have been seeing each over 10 yrs but flat was his and girlfriend just stayed over. I'm guessing the house to be moved into next week was being purchased joint.

I think the husband and wife were amicable too or else why would he have not got divorsed, not made a will or not named girlfriend nok. That's 3 things he made a decision over.....

I think everyone here agrees, the girlfriend has been badly looked after by the husband.

+1 to the bit in bold.

But I also think the girlfriend needs to take some personal responsibility for the situation she finds herself in.

Unless, of course, the OP can confirm that the husband refused point blank to divorce his wife (or allow her to divorce him) and that he also refused point blank to make a will.
