Need chargeback advice for a hotel room

Hi Guys

I need some advice whether a credit card company could help with a charge back.

I booked a hotel through Agoda which was costing £3k in total as it was for 3 rooms. The rooms were non refundable if cancelled.

Unfortunately due to some issue we had to cancel the trip. I spoke with Agoda who informed me if the property were willing to waive the cancellation they would do a refund.

Issue i have is the property are willing to waive the cancellation fees but need the Agoda's supplier to contact them to ask if they are willing to cancel it.

Agoda keep coming back to saying the supplier have been informed by the property that they are unwilling to waive the fees. I forwarded the email to the property and the named person who insists no one has been in touch regards to my booking and they are still willing to waive the fees.

The property have not been paid for this booking.

With the above scenario it seems either Agoda or the supplier want to keep the money, is there anyway a credit card company can help if i were to raise a charge back with supporting documents?

Thanks

Chris

  • No.

The payment was non refundable and you've not been refunded, so the chargeback would be successfully disputed.

The success or otherwise of any later goodwill gestures has no impact.
  • As ZX81 as said you'd have no option to dispute the payment on the grounds you cancelled the booking.

Your only option would be to dispute it for another reason, but I don't see one based on the information you have provided.

Is the cancellation reason covered by your travel insurance?

Unfortunately no, it was not covered
  • Thinking laterally, if you can't get Agoda to refund you, you may as well leave the booking as it is but talk directly to the hotel and try to come to some arrangement.

If they know you will not be attending, they can try to re-let the rooms. Agoda will still pay them and, if re-letting is accomplished, you might be able to negotiate a partial refund from the hotel from the money Agoda pays to them. It sounds, from what you've said, that the hotel is prepared to be reasonable about the situation.

It's a long shot, but it doesn't look like you have anything to lose.
  • Sorry forgot to mention, this stay was in August which I had cancelled a week before. Hotel are being reasonable as they sold the room again anyways but struggling getting refund from Agoda and the supplier.

Agoda says they need the supplier to agree, supplier saying it asked the property and they declined. Property saying no one has been in touch about it and they haven’t declined.

Property haven’t been paid for the stay so they can’t help, seems like supplier wanting to keep it.

Mate, this happens again and again and again. The monies gone, end of.
You took the risk of booking the cheapest room at a non refundable rate and lost. No amount of ("insert sob story here") will get your money back, they are cheap and non refunderble for a reason.

I know it's not what you want to hear but i'd rather tell you how it is and not give you false hope. I empathise because it's a kicker.

This is one of the drawbacks of booking through 3rd parties. Given the hotel have said they are happy to refund, then Agoda should honour that request and refund you.
Just who is the so called supplier between the 2 parties?

  • Another option would be to get a media resource involved. Several papers have 'Consumer Experts' that may run the story. It's amazing how often the threat of bad publicity leads to a gesture of goodwill ;)
