Cheap reliable simple car

Options
Cars these days seem to be more complicated with turbos , dpf filters, electrics etc. I want something simple and economical. Previously I've had good experience with old VW's but the pre 2000 models are getting a bit long in the tooth now. My latest Corsa has seized injectors and various other issues and I'm sick of driving a diesel now. So looking for a replacement. A colleagues Citroen c1 caught my attention he's had it from new and only a clutch has needed doing other than routine servicing. Should I look for one of these little 1 litre petrol cars ? Can anyone recommend anything else?
Thanks

Anything will be ok apart from the 1.0 turbo fiesta that melts itself.

    Even a Perodua Kenari*

(*Just coz it's a daft name for a car)

    What's your budget?
  • Dacia Sandero?

Low tech so less to go wrong (nothing wrong with that), cheap to run and insure

If you do, look at the older-model C1/107/Aygo, not the newer C1/108/Aygo. FAR simpler. The less gadgets, the better - when Toyota recalled worldwide for the "unintended acceleration" saga, almost all UK Aygos were recalled, about half of 107s, and very few C1s - simply because C1s tended to be lower-spec, so had cable throttle instead of fly by wire.

C107gos are a hoot to drive, too. But they really aren't very big - the boot is laughable.
  • I moved away from VW's for a more simple life!

Got a 15 year old 1L Kia Picanto, does over 30miles a day commuting, easily does 70mph, nips around in traffic, great on petrol, can sneak in to small parking spaces, I've had three grown adults in it with space for more. Pick the right one and it's £30py tax (I wasn't bothered about that), parts are cheap.

It's the fun factor that I had when I got my first car (1053cc polo breadvan) after passing my test and I'm completely hooked on my little car :D

Only 'high tech' things it has is electric front windows, heated rear screen which still works perfectly and intermittent wipers with options on the speed it wipes.

Couldn't ask for better and when the time comes I will look at getting another.

I'd recommend the Skoda Citigo or it's seat Mii identical twin

My 2015 greentech versions pay zero road tax, cheap insurance and 65mpg roughly. Great for nipping around town, easy to park. Wouldnt want to do masses of motorway journeys but competent little car. Zero issues for me since 2015
  • new version (2014 onwards) hyundai i10, go for the 1.25 16 valve its very smooth and good for motoroways too, then chosoe the spec you want in your price range, it you can go for one with some warranty remaining to cove rfor any unseen faults, though Hyundai/ KIA seem to be one of the best in terms of reliability.

MK1 Ford Focus (Petrol) if you can find a well kept one and check the dreaded rust hasn't invaded. Yes it's a ford, yes it's common and maybe boring to some but simplicity and reliability at its best. It's been peanuts to maintain...so far.
