Maybe it change in the last 5 years, but doubt it. The bios will also determine if a third party usb card will work or not. A bootable usb needs to be recognised by the bios long before the os takes over. Also had this before upgrading from 7 to 8, the 4 port card would not work and it was not a driver issue, as i used the same card at home. she had a compaq presario with a AMD x4???? Narra 4 or 5 Motherboard - time vs memory make it a bit vague

It was also one of those MS mcse questions years ago too

this guys claims to fix strange usb issues by resetting the bios to default value. Personally doubt this works, but if he were to upgrade to a newer version then i would be on board
