What would a reasonable pay increase request be?

I'm currently on £18k. once I get back from ML my role will change drastically to a hybrid of Business Development and Operations Manager.

Said jobs outside of London make around £30-40k OTE.

Senior roles in this region make about £35k.

A senior level employee at my company is on £27-£30k.

So I was thinking £25k?

I have seven years experience in the field and can speak 3 languages (both are relevant to the role).

  • Job titles don't mean much on their own so we can't really tell you whether 25k is reasonable. In some places an Operations Manager might involve opening up, dealing with the post and locking up at the end of the day. You're the best judge so if you think it's fair then you can but ask. But bear in mind that a 40% pay rise is a pretty whopping pay rise. I've worked in places where there wouldn't be the money to do it and/or they wouldn't give that big a rise because they'd worry about a domino effect with other staff.

Unless it's very clear to everyone that this new role is a promotion with lots of extra work and responsibility I'd wait for six months, do the changed role well and then talk about pay.
  • To be honest that’s something only you can decide, you can ask, your employer isn’t obliged to accept.
  • Employers want the most work for the least money.

Employees want the most money for the least work.

Capitalism doesn't work on reason and reasonableness, only mutual exploitation.

Ask for £25k. If you don't get it there, find somewhere you can get it, or adjust your salary demands. Repeat until satisfied.

Good advice. All my big jumps in salary have come when I moved to a different employer. When people talk about how they could get much more money doing their job elsewhere I always think “well what are you waiting for?!”.
  • I'd rather work for them, they've always been aware I'm underused/underpaid.

My previous job (with similar responsibilities although not so much on the business side of things) was £50k.

I know for a fact that some of my tasks (localisation is worth £25ph).

My biggest concern is that possibly nobody has got such a salary jump.

Fact is, in the private sector, you don't get payrises for merely being there another year. Rate of inflation is the best you'll generally get, unless you've had a promotion or taken on significantly greater responsibilities during the year. You might get a bonus if you've had a good year, which may bump up your total remuneration; but that's not the same as a salary increase.

You only get the big jumps when you jump too.

If they've so far been quite happy to underpay and underuse you, you can ask but that is a big jump.

They've always been aware I'm....... underpaid.
    .

In that case I wouldn't hold out much hope.

If they knowingly have this opinion it sounds like they are happy to let it ride.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

Cross posted. Completely agree. This says a lot to me of much they value the OP.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're currently on maternity leave and haven't started these new duties yet?

I'm not sure if asking for a stinking great payrise on your first day back would be well received.

I'd likely at least wait a few months to understand the role fully before negotiating how much I'm for it.
