Mokka or Captur?

Not sure if I've asked this before (but no trace after search).

Capture:
- low £30 tax, good styling - on the outside, economical.
But:
- basic looking interior, looks crapped e.g. lack of legroom, small engine = it in your lap in a crash!!

Mokka:
- seating looks more stylish and comfortable, looks spacious inside, bigger glass area gives better visibility, even 2016 has CD available (personal preference).
But:
- higher RFT £145 for 1.4 ltr. petrol engine, another 6" longer.

Anybody with experience of these, or recommend something in between? That is - in between size, and engine size.
I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard

What car do you have at present and what VED are you currently paying?
TBH For the pros you've listed the VED wouldn't come into question, it'd be different if say you were just shy of £40K OTR and £565 VED

A Renault or a Vauxhall? I'll walk thanks.

  • I wouldn’t fancy either. Check any Mokka carefully. Gearboxes were a real weak point and there are plenty of reports on their failures. Captur check for rust around the boot handle where it rubs the body work. I made the mistake of buying a new 2015 Scenic for my wife and so have spent an enormous amount of time in courtesy cars for various reasons. I find the captur small and not particularly nice to drive in either petrol or diesel. Clutches are also a weak point so check carefully for clutch judder. Plenty of reports about this.

Another on the list to avoid, especially the 1.5 petrol. Even VW have admitted it has problems.
  • We’ve got a Captur as a second car and I wouldn’t buy another one. It’s the 0.9 turbo petrol and it’s very underpowered on dual carriageways/motorways, you can boot it and it’s fast once you get up to speed but then the fuel economy suffers badly.

Nowt wrong with Vauxhall's if you get the right ones, my current one hasn't missed a beat in c130k miles. Which is more than i can say for the Ford's and BMW's previous to this.

Anyhoo - OP for me it would be the Mokka out of the 2 choices. Based on a test drive of both of these cars in the past not sweeping statements.

Had a Mokka as a courtesy car and hated it - like driving a tank.

Haven driven both of them recently as hire cars I preferred the Captur, the Mokka was heavy to drive, the Captur was very nimble (not sure what engine size).

Are you looking new or used?

If new, then remember that the Mokka is a GM Korea (Daewoo/Chevrolet as was) design, and is the last knockings (apart from the Viva) of the 2000-on Corsa platform - so now very long in the tooth and on the cusp of being discontinued.

It's being replaced by the already-available Crossland X, which is the same car as the Citroen C3 Aircross.
