Octopus. Energy

We changed to Octopus energy through ML Energy club. We went with them as there prices were good. We sent all our meter reading and agreed a monthly direct debit. Now after the first meter reading they have put our DD up by £21 a month more which makes it not worth changing suppliers in the first instance . They say that we use more energy than what our annual consumption from previous supplier stated.we were always in credit with last supplier and had a £370 rebate from them. Has anyone else had this problem with Octopos!

This is not an Octopus "problem".
This is a simple case of, as above, not quite getting how the direct debits for energy work.

Your payments are simply towards your usage. That's it. You get a bill and hopefully you've already paid the bulk if not all of it through your direct debit already.

A direct debit payment for energy is not a case of "I pay £50 a month and so I can leave the fire on 24/7 knowing the maximum it costs is £50". If that was the case we wouldn't have gas and electricity meters ;)

You do realise that you would use less gas and electricity in the summer and that having a credit by this time of the year would be relatively common?

Also if you switch provider in September and they've only based it on you used over the summer, of course the Debit going forward is going to be too low, unless you have really good insulation. So your moving from the Co-Op has only given you £370 back that you were going to use anyway. The only difference is now its with you.

If you were paying £142 a month previously you either live in a mansion or the debit was too high in the first place?
