Builder transferred invoice & debt into my name

Morning,
Bit of an odd one and I wasn’t sure what board this belonged to so please feel free to direct me elsewhere...
We’ve had a single story extension built.
Builder obtained quote for bifold doors and said we would have to pay directly for them but he wouldn’t charge us the VAT.
Due to time constraint the builder took £1000 from us (bank transfer) and paid the deposit for the bifolds as he said it would secure a time slot for them to be built.
Builder text us on the 8th Aug saying balance due £xxx and quoted the window companies bank details, so I transferred that money over to the window company.
Due to many other issues with the build, the relationship with the builder has broken down and yesterday I received an invoice for the doors and a lock repair from the window company addressed and sent to me. With them asking for immediate payment for an amount that equates to the VAT.
Can the builder do this? One change the invoice to my name and address and 2 increase the charge?
The window company just keep referring me back to the builder.
Can anyone offer any advice please?
Thanks in advance

If the agreement was that you would pay the window company direct, then that would explain why they have invoiced you directly. If they are VAT registered they need to charge you VAT. The builder may have been talking rubbish but that's not the window company's problem.0

Yes, I get that. The window company want their money and quite rightly so.
I paid the builder the deposit he then ordered and paid the deposit for them under his trade account. I then paid the balance (that builder quoted) directly to the window company, Including the cost for a lock repair that was nothing to do with us.0 -

If the builder paid the deposit and you paid the window company the balance direct, what are they invoicing you for? The VAT and the lock repair?0

He told us he wouldn’t charge us the VAT element on the quote0

I don’t know how to quote Littlerock but yes, the lock repair and the amount that equates to the VAT0

Better get your tenner out Lunatic! I hadn’t gone, I just didn’t receive notifications that anyone had replied.0

Where do i send my invoice minus the VAT for my £10 :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
I wonder if this is a simple misunderstanding. Did the builder possibly mean he would not charge VAT on his labour cost for fitting the doors or any mark up on the price of the doors?
I do not see how the builder could waive the VAT on a suppliers item unless he was going to pay the VAT out of his own pocket.0
