The doors manufacturer entered into a contract with the builder as the builder paid the manufacturer the deposit and (presumably) he ordered the doors. By the OP paying the balance direct to the company it could muddy the waters as to who now has a contract with whom.

The manufacturer must by law charge VAT on goods they supply, if they are VAT registered. When the builder said that the OP did not have to pay VAT, he could have not been speaking for the manufacturer.

The lock repair is the responsibility of those who broke it.

It appears that the window manufacturer is working on the basis that they have no chance of getting any money out of the builder and are going after the OP as they are in possession of doors.
  • If the builder was the one that ordered the doors and all was originally in his name then he is liable for payment. You paying the remaining figure should not matter.

Did they then supply the doors upon payment?

It's a bit confusing because the door manufacturer needed to charge VAT to whoever ordered them, whether a builder or a private individual, it would make no difference. Unless the manufacturer happen to be outside of the UK in an EU member country (which I doubt is the case here).

I think this builder may have thought he could do a quick VAT rip off by claiming back the VAT on his end and then telling you he was getting it VAT free for you.

You also say the sum equates the VAT amount, is it explicitly stated or are you just interpreting it as being so?

In any case, if the builder definitely made the order in his name and goods were released upon final payment and installed then I would say you owe nothing. It's between the manufacturer and the builder.
